Nkunku Transfer News: Milan Shocks as Roma Eyes Swap Deal

Christopher Nkunku’s Milan adventure may be over almost before it began. Ruben Amorim has placed the 28-year-old on the transfer list, a blunt call with just under two weeks left before the summer window shuts.

The French forward, once a pre-season favourite, now works on the fringes of the first team at Milanello. That early spark has faded quickly. So has his status in Amorim’s plans.

Roma have moved fast. According to Calcio Mercato, the Giallorossi are tracking the situation closely, sensing an opening they’ve been waiting on for months.

Roma return for a long-time target

This is not a new crush in the capital. Roma’s interest in Nkunku is described as firm and long-standing. Back in January, Gian Piero Gasperini identified the former Chelsea attacker as the ideal tactical piece to strengthen his left side. He saw Nkunku as the right profile, the right fit, the right moment.

He never got him. Resistance from both the player and the Rossoneri hierarchy blocked any deal in the winter. The door was slammed shut.

The admiration, though, never faded. Even after that rejection, Roma’s view of Nkunku has remained unchanged.

Now circumstances have flipped. Amorim no longer sees Nkunku as central to his project, and Roma suddenly find their path to another target, Rodrigo Mora, turning complicated. That combination has pushed sporting director Tony D’Amico back towards a familiar name.

This time, he is preparing what is described as a “fresh assault” for Nkunku.

A swap that suits both dugouts

Reports from Asromalive outline a scenario that would give this story a dramatic twist: a straight swap. Argentine attacker Matías Soulé could be included as a direct makeweight in negotiations.

On paper, it fits neatly. Soulé has been high on Milan’s recruitment list as they look to add creativity and goals in the attacking midfield area. For the Rossoneri, landing the Argentine would tick a key box in Amorim’s rebuild.

For Roma, Nkunku would finally arrive as the left-sided weapon Gasperini has long wanted. One move, two coaches satisfied. A rare, clean tactical solution for both sides of a Serie A rivalry.

The numbers help. Both clubs are said to value their players at broadly the same figure, somewhere between €35m and €40m. That alignment removes one of the usual flashpoints in a major deal.

The wage wall

The real problem lies elsewhere. Nkunku’s salary.

Soulé reportedly earns just over half of Nkunku’s current wage package. That gap is significant and cannot be brushed aside. Any agreement would need either Roma to stretch their wage structure, Nkunku to compromise, or Milan to get creative in how the deal is built.

With the deadline closing in, there is little time for drawn-out haggling. The clubs must thrash out not only the swap valuation but also a financial structure that keeps both dressing rooms – and both balance sheets – stable.

The framework is there: two clubs, two wanted players, matching price tags, and coaches pushing for their preferred attackers.

Now the question is simple: will wages kill a deal that makes footballing sense for everyone else?
