Noni Madueke's Miss Overshadows Victory in World Cup Friendly

Anthony Gordon and Ollie Watkins may have wrapped up a routine win, but the night belonged, for better and worse, to Noni Madueke.

Not for a moment of brilliance. For a miss.

Clean through in the first half, the winger squandered a glaring chance, then walked away with a grin that lit up social media for all the wrong reasons. As the goals flowed later, the clip of Madueke smiling after his blunder spread even faster.

The reaction was brutal.

On X, @cooksbits snapped: “Hopefully that’s the last we see of him this World Cup. Does ANYONE think he should be there?”

Another user, @marklamb2002, saw the smile and lost patience: “Laughing and smiling about it send him back and get foden here such a washed player.”

The criticism kept coming.

“The only reason why he’s in that squad is because he’s part of a premier league winning team,” wrote @click00001. “He contributed about 1 goal and 2 assists btw. I’d take out of form Palmer or Bowen over him without thinking twice.”

A friendly, a comfortable win, yet the mood around one player turned sour. The debate wasn’t about the scoreline; it was about selection, standards, and whether a World Cup place should be this forgiving.

Madueke fronted up after the final whistle.

“I should have scored one,” he admitted. “We definitely had a few chances, Morgz [Morgan Rogers] I think. But it will come. Better to miss them now than when the tournament starts."

No excuses, just a hint of regret and a promise.

He went deeper on the miss itself. “I should’ve probably gone with my right foot. Obviously, it was happening quick. I should’ve scored it, but when the tournament comes, I will score them.”

That’s the line that will linger. Not the smile, not the memes, but the pledge. In a squad fight this fierce, he’s just turned a simple miss into a test of whether he can deliver when the World Cup lights go on.
