Nordin Jackers: From Backup to Third Choice at Club Brugge

Nordin Jackers is staring at a winter crossroads.

Once seen as a credible contender to succeed Simon Mignolet between the posts at Club Brugge, the 29-year-old now finds himself pushed down to third choice and, inevitably, towards the exit door ahead of January.

From Mignolet’s stand-in to number three

Jackers arrived from OH Leuven with a clear brief: back up Mignolet, push him when possible, and be ready when called. He did exactly that. Whenever Brugge needed him, he delivered solid, reliable performances, enough that a section of the fanbase would not have complained had he started this season as number one.

The summer changed everything. The club moved for Yan Sommer from Inter, a signing that instantly reshaped the goalkeeping hierarchy. Jackers knew the score. Second choice behind a high-profile international, waiting for his chance, still very much in the frame.

That plan has now been ripped up.

Vanden Driessche leapfrogs Jackers

According to HLN, head coach Ivan Leko has made his decision. Argus Vanden Driessche, just 19 and highly rated inside the club, is now installed as Sommer’s understudy. Jackers has slipped to third.

It is a bold call. Sommer’s start at Club Brugge has been mixed: he produced important saves against Antwerp at the weekend, but he also carried the blame for the goal the side conceded. Even so, the staff have doubled down on their belief in Vanden Driessche, promoting the teenager ahead of an experienced professional.

That move says plenty about how Brugge view their future in goal. It says even more about Jackers’ present.

Time to move on

At 29, Jackers cannot afford to spend the prime of his career as a third-choice goalkeeper, training hard all week only to watch from the stands. Not if he still sees himself as a starter at the top level. Not if he wants more than the occasional cup tie or emergency call-up.

Given his displays for Club Brugge and his previous work at OH Leuven, interest will not be hard to find. Clubs around the Belgian Pro League know exactly what he offers: experience, calm under pressure, and a proven ability to step in without fuss.

January now looms as a decisive window. For Club Brugge, it is a clear bet on Sommer and Vanden Driessche. For Nordin Jackers, it looks increasingly like the moment to walk away and reclaim a starting shirt somewhere else.
