Nottingham Forest’s Carabao Cup exit to Leeds United on Tuesday did more than end a cup run. It ripped the mood music out of the City Ground.

From optimism at the weekend to open frustration in midweek, Forest supporters did not hold back when asked for their verdict. Across the divide, Leeds fans sensed something very different: a heavyweight beginning to stir.

Forest fans: “The smiles have gone”

The contrast with Saturday’s league display hit hard.

Ian did not bother dressing it up. For him, this was “a much worse performance than Saturday's” and the idea that Liam Delap alone might fix things up front simply doesn’t convince. What he saw instead was a team “not pretty to watch, no identity, lack of ideas,” and a club that feels like it needs “a rebuild… rather than tweaking.”

That theme ran through the night. Graham could not find a single positive. “Nothing positive to come from last night, that was plainly obvious,” he said, before turning his fire on individuals. In his eyes, Chris Wood, Ousmane Diomande, Dan Ndoye, Xaver Schlager and James McAtee “are not good enough”, and Oliver Glasner’s approach is a poor fit for the squad. Forest, he argued, were “too narrow and no bite up front.”

The anger was not just about personnel. It was about patterns of play that have become all too familiar.

David painted the most damning picture of the tactical loop that drove fans to despair: “The smiles have gone,” he said, as he described passage after passage of “passing back, passing back and passing back to Matz Sels, before he boots it to the centre circle where our lone striker is outnumbered and no one else is there to fight for the second ball.” For him, that simply “is not good enough.”

Andrew went even further, calling it “the worst Forest performance in over a year.” His assessment of the players was brutal: “Clueless… with little idea of what the playing plan should be.”

For a fanbase that has ridden out relegation battles and managerial churn, this wasn’t just a bad night. It felt like a warning flare.

Leeds fans: a giant stirring, but not yet complete

If Forest’s reaction was all angst and accusation, the Leeds end sounded very different.

Peter’s focus was more specific, but no less telling. He watched a side that could be “really good with just a couple of quality additions in the forward areas” because, right now, they are “so wasteful.” His main takeaway? The performance of Dan James. The winger “created so much,” Peter said, but those around him “didn't anticipate his crosses.” The structure is there, the cutting edge less so.

Ali tried to put a brake on the growing excitement. For him, the win and the display at Forest were “solid,” but nowhere near enough to justify any early-season hype. “Let’s not get carried away,” he warned. The squad, in his view, is still “light in a number of areas (striker, left-back, winger, goalkeeper and attacking midfield)” and those positions “need reinforcing to be productive over a long season.”

So Leeds leave the tie with belief swelling but eyes open. Forest leave with questions piling up.
