Olwethu Makhanya hasn’t kicked a ball for Rangers yet, but he’s already given the Ibrox support a minor heart scare.

The South African defender arrived from Philadelphia Union last week in a £3million deal, flagged instantly as a key part of Derek McInnes’ rebuild. Too soon for the opening-day trip to Tannadice, he watched on as Rangers stuttered to a 1-1 draw with Dundee United, the performance as raw as the squad itself.

So attention turned quickly to Europe. The Europa League qualifier against Jagiellonia Bialystok looked the perfect stage for a debut – and with it, a chance to calm a fanbase that has seen enough early-season stumbles to last a lifetime.

Instead, the anxiety levels spiked again.

Visa drama, flight confusion, and a restless support

Makhanya’s move has already been tangled in red tape. Visa issues delayed his arrival, and only the intervention of MP Dr. Zubir Ahmed pushed the process forward and allowed Rangers to clear the initial hurdle.

Just when that seemed resolved, another twist. As the squad boarded the flight to Poland, Makhanya wasn’t among them. Social media did the rest. Rumours, worry, and a sense of déjà vu for supporters who have seen promising signings bogged down by paperwork before.

With Ben Godfrey ruled out for around four weeks after limping off at Tannadice, McInnes is suddenly light in the one area no manager wants to be exposed – the heart of his defence. Emmanuel Fernandez stands as the only other senior centre-back currently available. The path looked clear for Makhanya to step straight in.

He won’t be the only new face in contention. Fellow signing Daisuke Yokota is also set to be involved, adding another fresh option for McInnes at a time when he needs them badly.

McInnes left Tannadice frustrated but not shocked. The draw with Dundee United looked exactly like what it was: a new team feeling its way through new ideas, with timing off and combinations still forming.

Now comes a different kind of test. European qualifiers rarely allow much margin for error, and Jagiellonia Bialystok will not arrive as tourists. This will be physical, direct, and unforgiving.

Rangers are expected to keep a core from the weekend. Lawrence Shankland, Thelo Aasgaard, Ivor Pandur, Tuur Rommens and Fernandez are all likely to retain their places, offering some continuity as the new arrivals are blended in around them.

Vanja Dragojevic is pushing to start and could make one of two debuts on the night. Youssef Chermiti and Dan Neil are also in the frame, with McInnes weighing whether to lean into the new era fully or temper the change with caution.

Makhanya and Yokota, though, feel like the headline calls. Throw them in at the deep end, or hold them back for a gentler introduction? The circumstances may leave the manager with little choice.
