Pape Matar Sarr Shines in Juventus Debut with Impressive Performance

Pape Matar Sarr needed only one European night in Turin to start justifying Juventus’ late move for him.

Thrown in from the start for the first time in a Bianconeri shirt, the midfielder played the full 90 minutes in a ruthless 5-0 Europa League win over N.E.C. Nijmegen on Thursday – and walked off to the kind of praise that matters most: that of his coach, Luciano Spalletti.

Spalletti sold on Sarr’s “thoroughbred” qualities

Spalletti did not hide his satisfaction afterwards. In the press conference, relayed by TuttoJuve, he reached for a vivid image.

“Sarr is a thoroughbred because he has quality in his running,” the Juventus coach said. “He had a good game tonight, especially considering it was his first. He also responded to me a couple of times, so that's positive. Players with these qualities can sometimes lack a bit of sharpness, but he did many things well. He was always involved with the team and close to the ball. I'm happy with his performance.”

It was only days ago that Sarr had his first taste of life in black and white, coming off the bench in Serie A against Sassuolo. In Reggio Emilia, Spalletti watched him from the touchline at Mapei Stadium, still very much a new arrival, still learning the patterns.

Against NEC, the reins came off.

Numbers that back up the eye test

The performance was not just about running power and positioning. The data painted the same picture of control and composure.

According to Sofascore, Sarr completed 98% of his passes on the night, and remarkably, he hit 100% accuracy in the opposition half. He registered 70 touches, constantly involved in Juventus’ build-up and circulation, and contested eight ground duels, winning three.

It was the kind of clean, efficient display that rarely screams for headlines but quietly wins over coaches.

The Italian papers were more restrained. Gazzetta dello Sport handed him a 6.5 out of 10, while Tuttosport and Corriere dello Sport both settled on a 6. Respectable marks for a first start, but with plenty of room left for his ceiling to rise.

A deadline-day gamble that could grow

Sarr arrived in Turin on deadline day from Tottenham, a late-market move that looked like smart opportunism from Juventus. The deal is an initial loan until the end of the season, costing the club €2.5 million, with an option to buy set at €27.5 million.

For that option to make sense, Juventus need nights like this to become routine.

One debut off the bench. One full European outing in which he barely misplaced a pass and earned the trust of a demanding coach. The foundations are there.
