The 26-year-old Portugal international is not seen as one of the “untouchables” at Stamford Bridge, leaving the door open to a late-window exit if a club is prepared to pay. Chelsea, though, are making one thing clear: Neto will not leave on the cheap.

Signed from Wolves for £54m in 2024, Neto sits in a market that has exploded for wide forwards. Chelsea’s hierarchy believe a shortage of top-level options has pushed prices to extreme levels, pointing to the £117m paid for Morgan Rogers and Paris St-Germain’s £145m valuation of Bradley Barcola as the new financial reality.

Those deals have helped shape Chelsea’s stance. Any club wanting Neto will have to reckon with a fee that reflects that inflation, not just the figure the Blues paid a year ago.

Manchester City’s interest adds a sharp edge to the story. A move to the Etihad would reunite Neto with Enzo Maresca, the former Chelsea boss now in charge of City. The pair are understood to have a strong relationship, and Neto was among the players reported to be frustrated when Maresca left midway through last season.
