Pep Chavarria Signs with Chelsea: A Journey from Figueres to the Premier League

Pep Chavarria did not stroll into Stamford Bridge through the usual doors.

No glittering academy pedigree. No teenage La Liga breakthrough. No hype train. At 24, an age when many top-flight full-backs are already deep into their careers, he was only just making his debut in Spain’s top division. Four years later, he has signed the biggest contract of his life: a five-year deal with Chelsea worth about £16.3m, plus a further £1.7m in add-ons.

"I'm so excited to get started," the 28-year-old said. "This is a dream for me as Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs in the world. It is a big opportunity but I am prepared and will work hard to help the team achieve success."

From Figueres to the Premier League

Chavarria’s story starts in Figueres, a city in Catalonia, where he turned out for his hometown club before moving to Olot. Those early years were spent far from the spotlight, grinding through Spain’s lower tiers while others his age were already on television every weekend.

The step up came in 2020 with Real Zaragoza. It was his first real taste of professional football at a bigger institution, a chance to show he could handle the pressure and pace of the Segunda División. Two solid seasons there opened the door that had long seemed closed: La Liga.

Rayo Vallecano took that gamble in 2022. The fee was modest — less than £2m — but the fit was perfect.

Rayo’s rise and a late-blooming full-back

Rayo were not supposed to trouble Spain’s elite. Yet, built on a fierce collective identity and a sharp eye for undervalued talent, they turned into one of the most awkward opponents in the league. Chavarria slotted straight into that mentality.

At Vallecas he grew into a reliable, combative left-back, known for his defensive aggression and the physical edge needed to survive in one of Europe’s toughest leagues. He made 125 appearances for Rayo, locking down the left side and becoming a constant presence in a team that regularly punched above its weight.

Those nights against Spain’s giants mattered. They shaped his reputation.

One game, one manager, one impression

Last November, Rayo hosted Real Madrid in a goalless draw at Vallecas. On paper, it was just another point earned against a heavyweight. On the pitch, it was something more personal for Chavarria.

Facing a side coached by Xabi Alonso, he delivered a standout defensive display, marrying aggression with discipline as he shut down some of the league’s most dangerous attackers. That performance stuck with Alonso. When the former Bayer Leverkusen boss later took over at Chelsea, Chavarria quickly moved from opponent to transfer target.

By the time Chelsea came calling, Chavarria had also added European experience to his CV. He started for Rayo in last season’s Conference League final, a tight 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace that still underlined his ability to operate on a big stage.

Alonso’s blueprint at Chelsea

Now, Chavarria arrives in west London as part of a clear tactical plan. Alongside new right-back Marco Palestra, signed from Atalanta for £47m in July, he gives Alonso the tools to recreate the wing-back system that powered Bayer Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title in 2024.

Chavarria brings depth and competition to a position that needed it after Marc Cucurella’s £51.8m move to Real Madrid in June. He is not the marquee name on the team sheet, nor the headline act in a window of heavy spending. But he is the kind of signing that can quietly define a manager’s era.

From Figueres to Olot, Zaragoza to Vallecas, and now Stamford Bridge, Chavarria has taken the long way round. The question now is simple: how far can that journey go under Alonso in Chelsea blue?
