Police Raid Vasco da Gama's Alex Teixeira's Home Amid Investigation

Police raided the home of Vasco da Gama forward Alex Teixeira Correa in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday as part of a sweeping investigation into alleged links between professional footballers and organised trafficking rings.

Officers searched the 30-year-old’s residence in the upscale Barra da Tijuca neighbourhood and combed through Vasco’s training centre, as a large-scale operation codenamed “the troop” unfolded across multiple states. According to the Associated Press, around 100 police officers were mobilised to execute four arrest warrants and 15 search warrants.

Vila Nova right-back Hayner Cordeiro is also under investigation.

Major operation, serious allegations

Espirito Santo police set out the stakes in a stark statement, saying the raids were designed “to gather elements to clear up crimes and dismantle the criminal structure under investigation.” The inquiry spans different Brazilian states and is aimed at uncovering alleged ties between figures in professional sport and trafficking networks.

At Vasco’s training ground in Rio, Correa left the premises without answering questions from reporters, slipping away as speculation swirled around his role in the case.

Vasco pledge full cooperation – and keep Correa in the squad

Inside the club, the message was one of collaboration with authorities and continuity on the pitch. Speaking at a press conference, Vasco director Admar Lopes stressed that the hierarchy is “cooperating with authorities” throughout the process.

For now, there is no suspension. Lopes confirmed that Correa “will continue training normally in the coming days and be available for matches,” with his status dependent on how the investigation develops.

That stance underlines the delicate balance Vasco are trying to strike: backing law enforcement publicly while keeping a key player active until any formal decision is made.

From matchwinner to the eye of a storm

The police action comes just days after Correa delivered on the field. He scored the decisive third goal in Vasco’s 3-1 win over Cruzeiro on Saturday, a strike that snapped an eight-game winless run in the Brazilian top flight and eased some of the pressure on the squad.

Correa has made 21 league appearances this season and, as it stands, remains available for upcoming domestic fixtures. His immediate footballing future is clear enough: he trains, he plays, he scores if he can.

What remains far less certain is how the unfolding legal case in Espirito Santo and Rio de Janeiro will shape the longer arc of his career.
