Portsmouth Sign Chelsea Starlet Ryan Kavuma-McQueen on Loan

Portsmouth have moved to sharpen their wide options with the season-long loan signing of highly rated Chelsea winger Ryan Kavuma-McQueen.

The 17-year-old arrives at Fratton Park with a growing reputation from Chelsea’s academy and a taste of senior football already on his CV. He made his first-team debut in emphatic fashion, coming off the bench in a 7-0 FA Cup win over Port Vale.

Chelsea tied the youngster down to professional terms in January, a clear sign of how they view his potential. Since then, he has edged closer to the first-team picture in west London, making the bench for Champions League fixtures against Paris St-Germain and Ajax, and earning a place in the match-day squad for Premier League games against Liverpool and Tottenham at the back end of last season.

Inside Cobham, Kavuma-McQueen has climbed steadily through the ranks, featuring regularly for both the Under-18s and U21s. Comfortable on either flank, he brings pace and direct running, the sort of profile Pompey boss John Mousinho has been chasing all summer.

Competitive Wide Options

Portsmouth’s wide department suddenly looks crowded and competitive. Kavuma-McQueen will battle for minutes alongside fellow new arrival Abu Kamara and existing options Josh Murphy, Harvey Blair, Eoin Kenny and Luke Brooke-Smith.

"We've been in the market for wingers for quite a while and Ryan ticks all the boxes of the profile of player that we want to bring in," Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent.

"He's quick, direct, can play off both sides and he's only 17 so that probably tells you how highly we rate him and how highly Chelsea rate him.

"He was away with the first team this pre-season and played minutes out on their tour so he's a very exciting prospect.

"We've tracked him throughout his youth career and he made the step up last year into the 21s side so we're really excited to get him through the door.

"I think he's going to fit the way that we want to play really well and we're really pleased to get this one done."

For Kavuma-McQueen, it is a first loan move and a first real test in senior league football. For Portsmouth, it is a calculated gamble on a teenager Chelsea already trust around their first team.
