Portugal's World Cup Exit Marks Missed Chance for Golden Generation
Wayne Rooney called Cristiano Ronaldo’s final World Cup appearance a sad moment for football. Yet, when Spain defeated a lifeless Portugal and Belgium crushed the United States on July 6, 2026, the day had its bright spots for the sport.
Millions were disappointed to see Ronaldo’s World Cup journey end. After the disappointment of Qatar 2022, few expected him to reach a sixth tournament at 41 years old, an achievement showing his resilience and dedication to fitness.
“He is a genius, a superstar,” Rooney said on BBC Sport. “What he has given to football is something very rare. He will be disappointed because he believed he could win this tournament.”
But the real sadness lies in how Roberto Martinez allowed personal decisions to overshadow Portugal’s potential. Only Martinez shared Ronaldo’s belief in winning, and that misplaced loyalty cost the team dearly.
A Predictable Collapse
Portugal’s limp exit in the last 16 was no surprise. Their campaign mirrored the frustrations of Euro 2024, ending with frustration and poor management. If repeating mistakes defines madness, then Martinez fits the description perfectly.
Leaving Goncalo Ramos on the bench against Spain was consistent with Martinez’s approach: Ronaldo first, everyone else second. Ramos had scored the winner against Croatia but was never chosen over Ronaldo despite being 25 and in form.
Martinez’s Misguided Faith
From the start, Martinez made it clear that Ronaldo was central to his plans, even visiting Saudi Arabia to confirm his intentions. This was despite Ronaldo showing during the 2022 World Cup that he was no longer effective at the top level.
The disastrous Euro 2024, where Ronaldo took 23 shots without scoring, should have ended Martinez’s tenure. Instead, he stayed, and Ronaldo became more of a hindrance than a help.
Signs of Decline
Portugal’s World Cup began with a dull 0-0 draw against DR Congo. Ronaldo celebrated his return by scoring twice against Uzbekistan but faded again in a poor performance versus Colombia.
Though he scored a penalty against Croatia—his first knockout stage World Cup goal—it was his only touch in the box all night. Martinez eventually substituted him late in a match that seemed destined for extra time until Ramos scored a stunning header.
Ronaldo’s Response
Ronaldo pushed back against calls for retirement, saying, “I am not going to be more Cristiano Ronaldo or less because I win the World Cup.” He thanked critics for pushing him, claiming he gave everything and would retire on his own terms.
His place among football’s greatest scorers remains secure. Yet, his legacy suffered due to performances and behavior in the last three international tournaments, where he arguably did more harm than good.
From Asset to Liability
Building teams around Ronaldo was understandable initially, but by now, time had caught up with him. Since 2016, Portugal has struggled to reach semi-finals in major tournaments, highlighting the burden Ronaldo became.
Key players like Bruno Fernandes underperformed, but when many stars falter, coaching must be questioned. There is no excuse for such a talented squad failing so badly at Euro 2024 and the World Cup.
Untapped Potential
Players like Ruben Dias, Nuno Mendes, Vitinha, Joao Neves, and Fernandes could rank among the best globally in their roles but failed to shine. Martinez himself admitted Portugal had a team capable of winning the World Cup, making his failure all the more baffling.
Hiring Martinez seemed pointless if his priority was keeping a superstar happy instead of crafting a winning side. His reign wasted precious time and talent. Bernardo Silva and others deserved a stronger leader. Ronaldo might have benefited from one too.
Had Ronaldo accepted a smaller role, he might have been a useful substitute. Instead, excessive indulgence led to further embarrassment on football’s biggest stage.
In a way, Ronaldo’s farewell wasn’t just sad for Portugal; it was a relief. Despite gratitude for his past heroics, his departure signals a chance for renewal.
