Premier League Matchweek 1: Team News and Selection Headaches
The new Premier League season arrives with a familiar frenzy: transfer dust barely settled, fitness doubts everywhere, Fantasy teams hanging on every press-conference hint. Matchweek 1 is here, and so is the first wave of selection headaches.
Below is how the opening weekend is shaping up, club by club.
Arsenal v Coventry
Mikel Arteta starts the campaign juggling risk and reward. New marquee signing Bruno Guimaraes is a major doubt, though the Arsenal manager is determined to give him every possible minute to prove his fitness.
"Let's see how it is. He is evolving really well," Arteta said, refusing to rule him out.
Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice are in a far better place. Both are “ready to be involved” after starting on the bench in last weekend’s Community Shield win over Manchester City, and both are expected to step back into central roles for the league opener. At the back, Jurrien Timber is still “a few weeks” away, while William Saliba remains a long-term absentee, leaving the defensive core largely unchanged from the Shield.
Coventry arrive under Frank Lampard with a brutal early blow. Last season’s top scorer Haji Wright has been ruled out for up to 12 weeks with a serious quad injury.
“He won’t be available for a little while, he’s got a very serious quad injury which is disappointing for Haji and for us,” Lampard said. “It’s certainly going to be a number of weeks.”
Ellis Simms is in line to step up and lead the line. There is at least some relief elsewhere: Ephron Mason-Clark and Jack Rudoni have shaken off pre-season issues and are in contention, though Lampard is unlikely to risk either from the start. Frank Onyeka faces a late fitness test and could yet alter the shape of Coventry’s midfield.
Hull v Manchester United
Hull begin the season stretched to breaking point. A “whole host” of first-team players are out until at least next month, including goalkeeper Jack Butland and midfielder Darko Gyabi. The loss of Joe Gelhardt further strips their attacking edge.
Hidemasa Morita and Cody Drameh are due back in training only after the Manchester United clash, so they will not feature. With Charlie Hughes sidelined, new signing Nobel Mendy is poised to step straight into the centre of defence. Given the absentees, Hull are expected to lean again on the tight, five-at-the-back system that carried them through the playoffs.
On the other side, Manchester United arrive with optimism but not a clean bill of health. Mason Mount, impressive in pre-season, is “touch and go for the weekend”, according to Michael Carrick, who stressed “there are no dramas” and that the midfielder is not facing a long layoff.
Matthijs De Ligt is back in training but not yet ready to be involved. Up front, Benjamin Sesko has rejoined the squad but is unlikely to be thrown straight into the starting XI, leaving Carrick with decisions to make over his attacking configuration for the opener.
Everton v Crystal Palace
Everton: team news is still to be confirmed, leaving Fantasy managers guessing for now.
Crystal Palace, under new boss Pierre Sage, are sweating on their goalkeeper. Dean Henderson twisted his ankle in the final pre-season friendly against Freiburg, yet Palace are hopeful he will be fit enough to start.
“We want him to play,” Sage said. “But we gave him a few days of treatment to allow him to be in his best shape.”
Everyone else is available. Jean-Philippe Mateta is back in the squad as he works his way to full fitness; he is unlikely to start but should see some minutes from the bench as Palace ease him in.
Ipswich v Sunderland
Ipswich: team news is yet to drop, adding a layer of uncertainty ahead of the deadline.
Sunderland, by contrast, are almost at full strength. Only Simon Adingra misses out as he continues to recover from an ankle problem. Manager Regis Le Bris has a near-complete squad to choose from and admits some tough calls lie ahead.
“We’ll see for the game time because they are not all at the same stage, but they are available,” he said.
New signing Thomas Meunier had been troubled by back pain, but the right-back trained this week, will be in the squad and could feature. Defenders Omar Alderete and Nordi Mukiele also return from injury, giving Sunderland depth and flexibility at the back from day one.
Nott’m Forest v Leeds
Nottingham Forest open the season without their captain. Ryan Yates has been ruled out after missing the final pre-season friendly against Stade Brestois and failing to recover in time. Defender Nicolo Savona is also sidelined, having suffered a minor setback after surgery at the end of last season.
“We had to take a step back, so he’s working in the gym again and working on his knee to get back on the grass. I think it will take a couple of weeks,” manager Oliver Glasner said.
Beyond those two, Forest have a fully available squad, giving Glasner options despite the absence of his skipper.
Leeds arrive with one eye on risk management. Noah Okafor, who finished last season with six goals in his last 10 matches, has been back training with the group for two weeks, but Daniel Farke is wary of pushing him too quickly.
“It’s my responsibility to see if it makes sense and we’ll take some late decisions,” Farke said.
Willy Gnonto is out with a hamstring injury — “We hope to have him back in team training soon,” Farke added — while Gabriel Gudmundsson is also “still out”. The rest of the squad are fit and available, leaving Leeds strong but not at full attacking power.
Brentford v Spurs
Bournemouth’s team news is still to come, leaving the focus squarely on a patched-up Spurs defence.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side will start the campaign without new club captain Micky van de Ven and full-back Pedro Porro, both ruled out with injuries. Their absence forces an immediate reshuffle: Archie Gray is expected to fill in at right-back, while summer signing Marcos Senesi, brought in from Bournemouth, could be thrown straight into the heart of defence.
Pape Matar Sarr is also not fit enough to feature, trimming options in midfield. De Zerbi at least has attacking firepower available. James Maddison, Dominic Solanke, Mateus Fernandes and Destiny Udogie are all ready to play, giving Spurs plenty of threat despite the defensive disruption.
Brighton v Aston Villa
Brighton’s new era under Fabian Hurzeler starts with a medical bulletin that reads more like mid-season than opening day. Yankuba Minteh is out for at least a couple of weeks, while Carlos Baleba, Kaoru Mitoma and Stefanos Tzimas are all doubts and will be assessed closer to Sunday.
New forward Promise David has a chance of involvement, though he is expected to begin on the bench as he eases into Premier League life.
Aston Villa’s team news is yet to be confirmed, but the shape of the game already feels clear: Brighton balancing ambition with caution as Hurzeler navigates his first serious injury puzzle.
Manchester City v Bournemouth
Manchester City have kept their cards close to their chest; official team news is still to come. The spotlight, for now, falls on Bournemouth and their new manager, Marco Rose.
Rose’s first competitive game comes with a depleted squad. Last season’s breakout star Junior Kroupi is out until around November after foot surgery, stripping Bournemouth of one of their most dynamic threats. Tyler Adams is being assessed and remains in contention, but Ryan Christie’s suspension opens up a vacancy in central midfield that Rose must fill.
David Brooks is also being monitored, adding another variable to an already complicated selection picture ahead of a daunting trip to the champions.
Newcastle v Liverpool
Newcastle’s midfield engine will start the season without one of its key pistons. Joelinton is out “for a couple of weeks” and will miss the opening weekend, manager Matthias Jaissle confirmed.
“I'm really confident that he will be back as soon as possible,” Jaissle said.
Summer signing Aladji Bamba is expected to slot into central midfield to cover the Brazilian’s absence. At right-back, Amar Dedic, only just through the door, could be thrust straight into the starting XI.
“He got some minutes in friendlies there, I am confident that he's ready and we need him,” Jaissle added.
Tino Livramento is edging closer to a return but has only taken part in one training session, so Newcastle are likely to hold him back a little longer.
Liverpool’s team news is still to be announced, but with Newcastle already signalling an aggressive use of their new recruits, this fixture is primed to reveal plenty about both sides’ early-season intentions.
Fulham v Chelsea
Alvaro Arbeloa’s first Premier League game as Fulham manager comes with immediate selection challenges. Defender Joachim Anderson is suspended and will miss the start of the season, while Tom Cairney is out until October after knee surgery earlier this month.
Arbeloa still has attacking excitement to lean on. New signing Gonzalo Garcia, brought in from Real Madrid, is expected to start up front, a bold statement for a debut in charge.
Across the capital, Chelsea under Xabi Alonso have their own balancing act. Summer signing Danny Welbeck, recruited from Brighton, is managing his fitness in training but could still make the bench.
“We are expecting him back on Saturday,” Alonso said. “We need to go day by day but that's the plan at the moment."
Jordan Henderson is ruled out until September with a wrist injury. Alonso also flagged that players who went deep into the World Cup “may need a bit more time”, though none are injured and all are available for selection.
So the season opens in familiar fashion: managers gambling on late fitness tests, new signings thrown straight into the spotlight, and line-ups that could swing Fantasy leagues before a ball is even kicked.
