PSG's Failed Pursuit of Zion Suzuki: Deal Falls Apart

PSG’s pursuit of Zion Suzuki has fallen apart at the last moment, ending the French champions’ bid to sign the Parma goalkeeper in this window just as the deal seemed all but done.

The move had reached an advanced stage. A fee with Parma was in place, believed to be around €35 million for the 23-year-old. Agreement with the player was there too. What remained were the final touches: the contract details and the commissions for his representatives.

That is where everything blew up.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano and RMC, Suzuki’s agents made late financial demands over commissions. PSG judged those demands excessive and walked away, despite having already shaken hands with both club and player on the main framework of the transfer.

The Paris hierarchy had gone so far as to book Suzuki on a flight to the French capital last Saturday. The plan was clear: medical tests, signatures, photographs, the usual unveiling of a new piece in Luis Enrique’s project. Instead, the deal unravelled before he could even board.

There had been a twist built into the plan. PSG had explored the idea of signing Suzuki and immediately loaning him to Juventus for a season, a move that would have allowed the Japanese international to continue his development in Serie A while remaining on Paris’ books. That route closed abruptly two days ago when Juventus cut off contact with PSG without offering any explanation.

With the Suzuki option dead, PSG’s goalkeeping hierarchy stays as it is. Matvey Safonov continues as the undisputed No 1. Behind him, Lucas Chevalier holds his role as understudy, watching a transfer window that promised upheaval suddenly fall quiet again.

The question now is whether this collapse pushes PSG back into the market, or whether the club decides that, for this season at least, the answer between the posts is already in-house.
