Raheem Sterling Charged with Dangerous Driving and Nitrous Oxide Possession

Raheem Sterling has been charged with dangerous driving and possession of nitrous oxide after a motorway crash involving a Lamborghini, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary have confirmed.

The incident took place on 28 May on the M3 southbound near the Minley interchange and involved only Sterling’s vehicle. Police said no injuries were reported.

The 31-year-old faces three allegations: dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation, and failing to provide a specimen. He is due to appear at Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court on 15 September.

It marks a stark off-field twist for a player who, not long ago, sat at the heart of England’s modern era. Sterling scored 20 goals in 82 appearances for his country, a key figure in Gareth Southgate’s side that reached the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and the final of Euro 2020.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, and raised in London, he emerged from the QPR academy before earning a move to Liverpool, where he broke into senior football and quickly became one of the Premier League’s brightest young forwards.

His career accelerated again in 2015 when he joined Manchester City. Across seven seasons he collected four Premier League titles, five League Cups and an FA Cup in 2019, forming part of one of the most dominant domestic sides English football has seen.

Sterling left City for Chelsea in 2022, but his influence waned. After slipping down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge, he spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Arsenal.

He then moved to Feyenoord on a short-term deal until the end of the season. That spell has now finished, and the former England international is currently without a club as he prepares for his court appearance in September.
