Rangnick–Schöttel Rift Signals End of an Era in Austrian Football

The power struggle at the heart of Austrian football is heading for a decisive moment on Friday. According to Austrian outlets Kurier and Krone, the supervisory board of the ÖFB will meet to settle the future of sporting director Peter Schöttel – and all signs point to the end of his nine-year tenure.

This is not a quiet, graceful exit. It is a breakup.

Relationship “beyond repair”

The fault line runs straight between Schöttel and head coach Ralf Rangnick. For months, the relationship between the sporting director and the German coach has been described as shattered, and now it appears to have reached the point of no return. The federation has already sidelined Schöttel, a clear signal that his influence has faded dramatically.

Marc Janko, former Austria international and now a Sky pundit, lifted the curtain slightly on what is happening behind the scenes. “If you ask around behind the scenes, then it is not hugely surprising,” he said of the current turmoil. With Schöttel “and Ralf Rangnick, it did not really work properly,” Janko added, underlining how long the tension has been simmering.

The key detail is damning for a sporting director. “It is indeed the case that for some time Rangnick, in all the matters that are important to him, has not been doing that via Peter, but via other people.” In other words: the coach effectively bypassed the man officially in charge of the sporting structure.

When a head coach and sporting director stop talking, one of them usually goes. In Austria, the momentum is clearly against Schöttel.

A golden spell under Schöttel

The timing makes the situation all the more striking, because on paper Schöttel’s era looks like a success story.

The 59-year-old joined the ÖFB setup in 2017 as U19 coach. Within two months, he had been promoted to overall sporting director. From there, the national team stepped into one of its most stable and productive periods in recent history.

Austria qualified for the European Championship in back-to-back cycles, reaching the last 16 in both 2021 and 2024. The federation also celebrated a landmark achievement last summer: a first World Cup finals appearance in 28 years. Austria advanced to the round of 32, where they went out to eventual world champions Spain.

Those milestones defined Schöttel’s tenure. They also underline how ruthless top-level football can be. Success on the pitch is not always enough to survive a broken working relationship off it.

Prödl emerges as favourite

So who steps into the vacuum if, as expected, the supervisory board draws a line under the Schöttel era?

No official decision has been announced, but Krone reports that an internal favourite has already emerged: Sebastian Prödl.

The former Bundesliga defender, who spent key years of his playing career with Werder Bremen, has been running the ÖFB’s youth department since 2024. Inside the federation, his work is said to be highly valued. He knows the structures, knows the pathway, knows the people.

And he brings one decisive asset that Schöttel no longer has: an “exceptionally good” relationship with Ralf Rangnick.

In modern international football, alignment between coach and sporting director often shapes everything from youth development to tournament performance. Austria now stands at that crossroads. On Friday, the supervisory board will not just decide on Peter Schöttel’s future – it will decide whose vision, and whose alliances, will define the next chapter of the national team.
