Rasmus Ankersen Steps Down as Southampton Director

Rasmus Ankersen has stepped down from his role as a director at Southampton, drawing a line under his formal day-to-day influence at St Mary’s while remaining firmly invested in the club’s future.

The 42-year-old, a central figure in Sport Republic’s multi-club model, will no longer sit on the board but continues as a co-owner of the Championship side. It marks a shift rather than a full exit, a recalibration of responsibilities across an increasingly busy portfolio.

Ankersen’s presence at Southampton had already faded from the foreground. His appointment as president of Turkish club Goztepe pulled him away from the south coast, even as he stayed plugged into Saints’ recruitment operation behind the scenes. The workload across continents finally told.

Before arriving at Southampton, Ankersen built his reputation at Brentford between 2015 and 2021, a period that culminated in the Bees’ long-awaited promotion to the Premier League. That track record in data-led decision-making and squad building helped shape Sport Republic’s vision when it took charge at St Mary’s.

Sport Republic itself is controlled by Serbian businessman Dragan Solak, who holds the majority stake in Southampton. The group has expanded aggressively, also owning a majority stake in French side Valenciennes and in Goztepe, who are currently bottom of the Turkish Super Lig.

With Ankersen stepping back from the Southampton boardroom but still tied in as co-owner, the question now is how Sport Republic balances its ambitions across three struggling projects — and which club feels the next big decision first.
