Real Madrid Pursues 15-Year-Old JJ Gabriel Amid Contract Dispute

Real Madrid have launched an aggressive push to sign 15-year-old Manchester United academy forward JJ Gabriel, with the teenager formally attempting to cut ties with the English club immediately.

According to MyJoyOnline, Gabriel has sent United official notice of his intention to cancel his registration with immediate effect. United, for their part, are not accepting that stance. The club maintains his registration remains valid until the end of the season and is prepared to contest the move.

Gabriel, who holds a European Union passport, turns 16 on October 6. For now, he is not training with United, a striking situation for a player once seen as one of the brightest prospects in their youth ranks.

European giants circle

The tug-of-war is not just between United and Madrid. Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern are all tracking Gabriel, while Chelsea are also said to hold strong interest. Several sources have described Real Madrid’s pursuit as “active”, underlining how determined the Spanish giants are to get this deal done.

Madrid want Gabriel in the door as soon as possible and plan to place him with Real Madrid Castilla, their reserve side. Castilla compete in the regionalised third tier of Spanish football, facing fully-fledged senior teams — a steep, demanding environment for a 15-year-old but one Madrid believe he can handle.

United accused of breaking pathway promises

Around Gabriel, there is a growing feeling that Manchester United have not delivered on what was outlined as his route to the first team. Those close to the player believe the club failed to follow through on promises over his progression and opportunities.

Inside the camp, there was an expectation that Gabriel could have become United’s youngest-ever first-team player if he had been selected for the English Football League Cup tie against Brighton. That moment never came.

Head coach Michael Carrick, who had already given Gabriel a taste of senior involvement by bringing him on in a pre-season friendly against Atletico in Stockholm, has urged caution. Carrick has stressed the need to consider the youngster’s age, welfare and the growing spotlight around him.

Gabriel’s representatives do not share those concerns. They point to Max Dowman’s Arsenal debut at 15 as evidence that a player of Gabriel’s age can handle top-level exposure if he is good enough and properly supported.

Legal maze and looming birthday

Any immediate move is complicated by strict regulations around the registration of underage footballers. Those rules are likely to slow down, if not block, a rapid switch before his 16th birthday.

That birthday, though, is key. Because Gabriel holds an EU passport, he may be able to join a club in the European Union as soon as he turns 16, clearing a path for Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern or PSG to make their move.
