Luis Campos and Nasser Al-Khelaifi are steering PSG towards something very different: a recruitment model built on sustainability rather than shockwaves. After the Neymar and Lionel Messi years, the mood in Paris has changed. The board have reportedly concluded that “it is better to look for the new Olise than Olise,” a phrase that neatly captures their new doctrine – identify stars before they explode, not after.

The scars of past sagas are still fresh. Inside the club, there is a clear desire to avoid another drawn-out, high-stakes pursuit that leaves them with what one official described as “the knife at the throat” of Financial Fair Play and their wage structure. With Olise expected to command a salary north of €20 million a year, PSG have decided this is not their fight.

Instead, the spotlight turns inward. Domestic talent is back in fashion at the Parc des Princes. Ligue 1 prospects such as Maghnes Akliouche and Oumar Diomande have moved firmly onto Luis Enrique’s radar as Paris look to build a squad that is younger, cheaper, and easier to bend into a long-term project.

A “Galactico” for Mbappé?

Florentino Pérez views the London-born France international as a fully fledged “Galactico”, the kind of elite wide forward who can unlock Kylian Mbappé’s full potential in white. L’Équipe report that Olise has already sounded out France team-mates Mbappé and Aurélien Tchouameni about life at the Bernabéu, doing his homework before a potential leap.

The numbers from his last campaign back up the hype: 22 goals and 31 assists. Those are not speculative, developmental figures. Those are prime-time numbers from a player who, by all accounts, feels ready for Spanish football and the unique demands of Madrid.

And crucially, Olise is said to be “particularly determined” to make the move. Bayern initially closed the door, refusing to entertain a sale. A firm stance from the player, though, has a habit of reshaping the landscape in Bavaria. This one could yet turn into a power struggle.

Madrid’s money, Madrid’s dilemma

If any club can contemplate one of the most expensive operations in football history, it is Real Madrid. The European champions have just posted a record €1.161 billion in revenue and have already brought in substantial funds through summer sales. On paper, they are built for this kind of deal.

But even Madrid have limits.

To squeeze Olise into their financial framework, something may have to give. The future of Vinícius Júnior hangs over the whole operation. The Brazilian is entering the final year of his contract, and L’Équipe claim that if no agreement is reached, he could be sacrificed to fund the Olise move and keep the accounts balanced.

Selling a player of Vinícius’ stature would be a seismic call, both on the pitch and in the dressing room. Yet this is how Madrid operate: ruthless, unsentimental, always looking at the next cycle. If Pérez truly believes Olise is the next Galactico, no option can be ruled out.

Bayern brace for a long summer

For now, Bayern hold the player and the contract. They are under no obligation to sell and are unlikely to let one of their key men leave without a fight. Any negotiation with the German champions tends to be hard-nosed, and this one has all the ingredients to drag on.

PSG’s withdrawal, though, removes a major variable. With no Parisian bidding war to inflate the price or wages, Madrid stand alone at the front of the queue, should they choose to formalise their interest. The path is clearer. Not easy, but clearer.

As Paris turn their attention to the “next Olise” in Ligue 1 and Madrid weigh up whether to cash in on Vinícius to land the current one, the question now is simple: who blinks first – Bayern’s board, or a player set on the Bernabéu?
