Real Madrid have built a protective ring around Yan Diomande, and it is no accident.

The 19-year-old Ivorian is already a record-breaker at the Bernabéu. His move from Leipzig cost 125 million euros, a fee that could climb to 140 million if he hits a series of performance-related targets. No player in the club’s history has ever arrived with a higher price tag.

Yet he has not started a single game.

Diomande has only appeared in brief cameos, always from the bench, always in the final minutes. For a signing of that scale, the contrast is striking.

José Mourinho and the club insist this is all part of a carefully drawn plan. They want to slow the pace, not the player. The idea is to manage his integration step by step, away from the kind of crushing spotlight that has swallowed young talents before.

Mourinho laid out the approach before the Inter match. Diomande joined the squad late. He needs time. His moment will come. That was the message, and inside the club nobody intends to deviate from it.

The Argentine arrived last summer from River Plate for 63.2 million euros. At 18, he was sold as the next big thing, another jewel in Real Madrid’s long-term project. Instead of a gradual introduction, he was thrown straight into the starting XI by Xabi Alonso. Not once. Repeatedly.

The expectations were enormous, the patience far less so.

Mastantuono struggled under that weight. There was no detailed adaptation plan, just the assumption that pure talent would carry him through. It did not. Little by little, he slipped out of the starting line-up, reduced to a role off the bench. By this summer, the club had sent him on loan to Fiorentina.
