Richarlison Reveals Tottenham Blocked Vasco Return

Richarlison has laid bare his frustration over a failed return to Vasco da Gama, telling supporters the move collapsed because Tottenham refused to agree to the terms of a loan.

Speaking directly to Vasco fans in an emotional Instagram video, the Brazilian forward said he turned down other proposals in order to push for a short spell back in Rio de Janeiro.

“Other offers were made to me but I made it very clear I wanted to join Vasco until December,” Richarlison said. “Unfortunately, Tottenham set a limit on the loan, which is why it didn’t work out.”

He did not specify what that “limit” was, but made it clear he believes the obstacle came from north London, not Brazil.

Even so, the 27-year-old insisted his bond with Vasco remains unshaken.

“I think I’ll be at Sao Januario soon, and in Barreira, and you know how fond I am of you all,” he told supporters. “One day I’m going to make this dream come true; it’s my dream, my grandfather’s dream, and my family’s dream. I’m speaking from the heart here because I really wanted to play for Vasco.”

While his heart is in Rio, his body is stuck in limbo at Spurs.

Last season, Richarlison finished as Tottenham’s top scorer in the Premier League, hitting 11 goals and playing a key role in steering the club away from a shock relegation battle. He finally looked settled after an uneven first year following his 2022 move from Everton.

The reward has been brutal. He has been left out of Tottenham’s registered Premier League squad for the current campaign, cut adrift just as his form and confidence had started to recover.

The situation has only worsened with the arrival of Omar Marmoush from Manchester City, a signing that has nudged Richarlison even further down Ange Postecoglou’s attacking hierarchy.

So far this season, he has featured just once in the league — a bleak 3-0 defeat to Brentford on the opening weekend. No minutes since. No clear route back into the side.

All of this comes with the clock ticking on his future. Richarlison has now entered the final 12 months of the five-year deal he signed in 2022. One year left, no squad place, and a dream move home blocked at the last hurdle.

For a player speaking so openly “from the heart,” the next decision in his career may be the most ruthless one he has to make.
