Rio Ferdinand Questions Manchester United's Transfer Strategy After Hull Defeat

Rio Ferdinand has raised serious doubts over Manchester United’s transfer strategy after their shock defeat to Hull City, questioning whether the club have left themselves short where it matters most – up front.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former United defender homed in on the budget and the priorities of Michael Carrick’s recruitment team, who have spent the summer strengthening everywhere but the frontline.

“The big question is, does United’s budget stretch to go and get an Ollie Watkins or someone like that now?” Ferdinand asked, putting a spotlight on the lack of a marquee centre-forward addition.

United have poured resources into midfield, bringing in Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba. The spine has been reinforced, the engine room rebuilt. But the cutting edge? Still up for debate.

That tension was laid bare at Hull. Benjamin Sesko, a £73m signing and the man many assumed would be the focal point of the attack, started on the bench. Matheus Cunha got the nod to lead the line instead. United lost. Questions followed.

Ferdinand did not hide his frustration, especially when reflecting on a missed opportunity elsewhere in the market. Danny Welbeck’s move to Stamford Bridge clearly grated.

“If Danny Welbeck was on the market, and he clearly was, that’s one who Man United should have gone for because he could still have had an important role to play despite being happy to be on the bench at this stage of his career,” he said.

It was a pointed remark. Welbeck, a former United academy product, would not have been a blockbuster signing, but Ferdinand sees him as the kind of experienced squad option the club lack in attack – reliable, flexible, and content to support rather than dominate.

Instead, United watched him join a rival while they continued to reshuffle the middle of the pitch.

The Hull defeat sharpened the focus on Sesko’s situation. A huge fee, a huge expectation, and yet no place in the starting XI on a difficult away day. For Ferdinand, that decision jarred.

“The importance of Benjamin Sesko is huge, especially going to a place like that. You need him in the team and I’m interested to see how he does this season in that sense,” he said, underlining how central the striker should be to United’s plans.

The message was clear: if United can’t stretch to an Ollie Watkins-level signing now, they cannot afford to mismanage the one major striker they do have.
