Robbie Keane Steps Down as Ferencváros Coach

Robbie Keane has stepped down from his role as head coach of Hungarian giants Ferencváros, drawing a sudden line under a highly successful 18-month spell in Budapest.

His departure ends a period in which the 45-year-old rebuilt his reputation on the touchline. Keane delivered the Hungarian Cup this season and drove Ferencváros to a second-placed finish in the league, having already taken them to top-flight glory last year. For a club accustomed to winning, he kept the silverware flowing.

It was not just about trophies. Keane earned praise for backing youth, most notably helping to accelerate the rise of Hungary international midfielder Alex Toth, who has since earned a move to Bournemouth. That willingness to trust emerging talent has become a key part of how his coaching career is being judged.

This is not his first successful stint abroad. Before Ferencváros, Keane claimed an Israeli league title in his single season in charge of Maccabi Tel Aviv, another demanding club where pressure is constant and patience is thin. He left with a championship on his CV and a growing sense that his managerial path would not be confined to one country.

Now the focus snaps to Scotland. The Republic of Ireland’s all-time record goalscorer is currently favourite to take over at Celtic, the reigning Scottish champions. The link is not a new one: Keane scored 12 goals in just 16 games during a prolific loan spell at Celtic in 2010, and his name has hovered around the club ever since whenever a vacancy loomed.

For Celtic, he would represent a bold, front-foot appointment. For Keane, it would be a return to a club and a fanbase that already know his name, this time with a clipboard rather than a captain’s armband.

The next move now rests with the Scottish champions – and with a manager who has quickly turned promising early steps into a serious coaching career.
