Santiago Bueno Joins Club America on Loan

Santiago Bueno’s Wolves spell has been put on pause – and rebooted in Mexico City.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers centre-back has joined Club America on loan until the end of the season, with the Mexican giants securing an option to buy the Uruguay international.

Bueno arrived at Molineux from Girona in August 2023 on a five-year contract and quickly became a regular, racking up 70 Premier League appearances across three seasons. He marked his first goal for Wolves in memorable fashion last September, heading in during a 1-1 draw against Tottenham.

He featured 29 times in the league last term as Wolves’ eight-year stay in the Premier League came to an end with relegation to the Championship. The drop changed everything. So did the numbers.

With the new campaign under way, Bueno found himself on the outside. He did not make a single appearance at the start of this season and was ultimately left out of the club’s 25-man squad.

That squad squeeze opened the door to Mexico.

Club America, currently sitting top of the Liga MX table, moved to bring in the 27-year-old, offering him a route back to regular top-flight football and giving themselves the chance to make the deal permanent.

“This was our most difficult move of the whole window due to the circumstances,” Wolves technical director Matt Jackson told the club’s website. “We were aware that there were open markets which may suit Santi after our deadline, and when we had too many players for the 25-man squad, it was unfortunately him who missed out.”

For Wolves, it is a pragmatic call in a crowded defensive department. For Club America, it is a statement signing in the middle of a title push. For Bueno, it is a sharp change of scenery and a chance to prove he should not be the one left out when squads are named.
