Sao Paulo Eye Free Transfer for Jamie Vardy After Cremonese Exit
Brazilian club Sao Paulo is considering signing former Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy on a free transfer following his exit from Cremonese. The 39-year-old forward is exploring options after returning to England, while Sao Paulo debates making an official offer.
Morumbi Officials Weigh Up Potential Move
The South American side has reportedly initiated contact to bring in the ex-Leicester forward after his contract with Cremonese ended this summer. Journalist Fabrizio Romano first revealed the interest, which ESPN Brazil later confirmed. Vardy finished his Italian stint with seven goals from 29 matches, though his team was relegated to Serie B.
Club Board Divided on Signing
ESPN Brazil reports no formal talks have begun yet, but Sao Paulo’s management sees Vardy as an intriguing opportunity. Some executives believe he remains in strong physical and technical form and could bring a winning attitude to the squad. Others are wary due to his approaching 40th birthday in January and the sizable financial commitment involved.
Veteran Forward Considering Next Step
Sao Paulo aims to strengthen their attack, currently led by Jonathan Calleri, who recently extended his contract until 2028. This would present a new challenge for Vardy, who became a Leicester legend with 200 goals across 500 appearances over 13 years. He played a key role in Leicester's fairy-tale 2015-16 Premier League title, scoring 24 goals that season. After wrapping up in Italy, Vardy returned to England with his family and launched a podcast, making it clear he won’t be returning to play for Leicester.
Struggling Attack Needs Reinforcement
If Vardy joins Sao Paulo, he would arrive mid-season while the team sits 13th in the Brazilian top flight after 22 games. Their frontline has struggled badly, netting only five goals in the last six matches and showing little attacking threat since May. Adding an experienced goal scorer like Vardy could provide the spark needed to improve their form and climb the table.
