Saudi Roshn League Faces Major Schedule Changes for Gulf 27
The Saudi Roshn League calendar is heading for a major reshuffle, with the national team’s Arabian Gulf Cup campaign set to take precedence over domestic action.
Saudi Arabia will host the 27th edition of the Arabian Gulf Cup, “Gulf 27”, in Jeddah from 23 September to 6 October, and preparations for that tournament are already forcing the league to bend.
According to Saudi newspaper Al-Riyadiah, the Roshn League association is preparing a package of schedule changes after a direct request from national team coach Georgios Donis. The Greek manager has asked for the training camp to be extended by an extra seven days before the tournament kicks off.
That single demand has opened the door to sweeping adjustments.
Several rounds are expected to be affected, with the eighth round sitting right in the firing line. It is currently slated for 17 September – less than a week before Gulf 27 begins – and officials now anticipate it will be postponed.
That would push back one of the league’s marquee fixtures: a clásico between Al-Hilal and Al-Ittihad at Kingdom Arena, a match that would normally dominate the football conversation in the country. This time, it might have to wait.
Donis is pushing hard for maximum preparation time as he chases a long-awaited return to regional glory. Saudi Arabia have not lifted the Arabian Gulf Cup since 2003, a 23-year drought that weighs heavily on every campaign.
The Greek coach took charge of the national team before the start of the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. That tournament ended in disappointment, with Saudi Arabia exiting at the group stage, bottom of Group Eight with just two points.
Now, with the league calendar on the move and a home tournament on the horizon in Jeddah, Donis is clearly betting that extra days on the training pitch can help turn those recent scars into a Gulf title challenge.
