Sebastien Pocognoli: Leading Candidate for Scotland Head Coach

Sebastien Pocognoli has emerged as the Scottish FA’s leading choice to succeed Steve Clarke as Scotland head coach, with talks advancing and a decision expected soon.

The 39-year-old Belgian, who left Monaco at the end of last season, has impressed the SFA hierarchy during discussions. Chief executive Ian Maxwell and newly appointed chief football officer Craig Mulholland have spoken to several candidates, but Pocognoli is understood to sit at the top of their shortlist.

Time is not on Scotland’s side. The national team are back in competitive action in the Nations League next month, with a demanding four-game block starting away to Slovenia on 26 September. The SFA want a new manager in place well before then to shape the squad and set the tone for a new cycle.

Pocognoli’s coaching reputation soared in Belgium when he guided Union Saint-Gilloise to a historic league triumph in 2024-25, delivering the club’s first title in 90 years. That achievement, coupled with his work at Monaco, has marked him out as one of Europe’s more intriguing young coaches.

His playing career gives him added familiarity with British football. Pocognoli spent spells in England with West Bromwich Albion and Brighton & Hove Albion and collected 13 caps for Belgium, offering a blend of top-level experience and a working knowledge of the British game that appeals to decision-makers at Hampden.

If appointed, Pocognoli would become only the second foreign manager to take charge of the Scotland men’s team, following German coach Berti Vogts’ tenure in the early 2000s. It would be a significant break from tradition and a clear statement about the SFA’s willingness to look beyond domestic candidates.

The search was triggered when Clarke, who had signed a new four-year contract as recently as May, chose to resign after Scotland’s group-stage exit at the World Cup, bringing a seven-year reign to an abrupt close.

Now the clock is ticking. With the Nations League looming and a new era to define, the SFA stand on the brink of a bold appointment.
