Shay Given: Chelsea Would Seize Chance to Sign Jordan Pickford if He Shows Interest
Former Premier League goalkeeper Shay Given thinks Chelsea would quickly move to sign Jordan Pickford, the Everton and England goalkeeper, if the player showed any interest in a transfer. Pickford, 32, has been a reliable figure at Goodison Park for nearly a decade since his £25 million move from Sunderland in 2017.
Given on Pickford’s Quiet Transfer Speculation
Despite Pickford's consistent form and being England’s first-choice keeper for much of his career, rumours about other clubs pursuing him have been scarce. Given shared his surprise at this during a chat with BOYLE Sports, highlighting Pickford's impressive tenure and commitment.
"Jordan Pickford has been at Everton for nearly 10 years now and he’s been England number one for most of that time too and he broke the appearance record for England World Cup games. It is strange that we haven’t heard of other clubs moving in for him during that time," Given said.
He suggested that Pickford might be content at Everton, noting that goalkeepers often peak later in their careers. Given recalled his own experience moving clubs at 33 and emphasized Pickford’s potential to continue performing at a high level.
"You’d think Chelsea would be on the phone tomorrow and jump at the chance to sign him if he gave them any encouragement," he added.
Pickford’s Consistency Praised
Given also applauded Pickford’s steady performances and notable saves, recalling a spectacular stop against Sandro Tonali at St James’ Park last season. He described Pickford as a "Steady Eddie," a compliment reflecting reliability and strong character.
"He’s a bit of a Steady Eddie, and if you think I’m playing him down by saying that, I’m not. I’m playing him up," Given said. "When you’ve got a goalkeeper who is that steady, it’s a real plus, and he’s got a real personality. Some people say it can spill over at times, but it shows his passion and hunger and desire for the team to do well. It’s his will to win, you can’t coach that or teach it. It’s just who he is, and I don’t mind that at all."
Pickford’s Commitment to Everton
Pickford has expressed strong loyalty to Everton, emphasizing the good relationship he shares with the club and its supporters. After a match against Brentford last April, he praised the fanbase and his connection with the team.
"Everton’s been so good to me, and I’ve been so good to Everton, we’ve got a great relationship. I love the fans, the fanbase is quality. I’ve got the best chant that Everton fans sing. It takes some doing to get an Everton chant, let me tell you that," Pickford said.
Looking Ahead: Everton’s New Season
Everton will start their 2026–27 Premier League season hosting Crystal Palace on August 22. Pickford’s leadership and quick reflexes will again be key to the Toffees' defensive strength as they face a challenging domestic schedule.
