Southend United Signs Ryan Battrum on Loan

Southend United have moved to strengthen their promotion push with the loan signing of West Ham United right-back Ryan Battrum on a month-long deal.

The 21-year-old, who is equally comfortable stepping into midfield, already knows Roots Hall and its noise. He featured against Southend for West Ham in a pre-season friendly back in July, a run-out that clearly left its mark.

"When I heard about Southend's interest I was buzzing," Battrum told the club’s website. "I've played against them and watched them a lot. Getting crowds of 10,000 in the National League is amazing."

For a player trying to force his way into senior football, that kind of stage matters. For Kieron Dyer, it is about depth, detail and standards in a side that has started fast.

Southend sit fifth in the early National League table, having lost just one of their opening seven games. The platform is there. Now Dyer wants competition to keep it sharp.

"It's always good to have two players for every position," the Southend boss said. "He gives Vontae Daley-Campbell great competition at right-back. He's got great energy, power, and strength, and he can also invert which we like our full-backs to do. He ticks all the boxes."

That last point is key. Dyer’s full-backs are asked to step inside, join the build-up and squeeze opponents. Battrum’s ability to invert and operate higher up the pitch gives Southend another tactical lever, not just a like-for-like understudy.

The timing feels deliberate. A strong start has raised expectations, and the club have responded by adding a young Premier League prospect to the mix rather than waiting for problems to appear.

Battrum will not have to wait long for his first taste of it either. He is available for Tuesday night’s home clash with Tamworth, where those 10,000 voices he talked about will get their first real look at Southend’s latest addition.
