St Johnstone Sign Joel Cotterill from Swansea City

St Johnstone have moved to strengthen their midfield, sealing the signing of Joel Cotterill from Swansea City for an undisclosed fee.

The 21-year-old has agreed a one-year deal that keeps him in Perth until the summer of 2027, a significant commitment for a player still in the early stages of his senior career but already well-travelled.

Cotterill comes through the door with a pedigree shaped in Swansea’s academy, where he developed in a system built on possession and technical control. He broke into the senior side in 2022, then set about learning the hard way on loan spells with Stockport County, Swindon Town and Bristol Rovers.

The real Scottish audition came last season. Sent north to Dundee for the second half of the campaign, Cotterill featured 11 times in the Premiership and found the net once, a run that gave him a first-hand feel for the pace and physical edge of the division St Johnstone now want him to help them navigate.

His decision to commit was sharpened by a direct pitch from the manager at the start of the week.

"I had a call with the gaffer on Monday and he told me everything about the club," Cotterill told the club’s media team, outlining how quickly the move gathered pace.

He did his homework too. Cotterill watched St Johnstone’s match against Dundee on Wednesday night, using it as a live scouting mission to see where he might fit.

"I watched the game against Dundee on Wednesday night – and I saw how the team wants to play.

"Growing up at Swansea, it was always a team with the ball. I feel my biggest strength is being in possession and making things happen. I also like to drive forward and like to think I can be powerful with the ball."

Those words will resonate with a support that has long craved more control and creativity in the middle of the park. Cotterill presents himself as a midfielder who wants responsibility, not just safe sideways passes.

His loan trail has already taken him through different leagues, dressing rooms and pressures. That, he believes, has hardened him for what comes next.

"I've had different challenges out on loan. I think I've adapted previously and I've already got a taste for playing in the Scottish Premiership.

"It can be demanding and the games come thick and fast, but I'll make sure I'm ready for it and up for the challenge."

St Johnstone now hand him the platform. The rest is up to Cotterill and how quickly he can turn that promise on the ball into influence in a league that rarely grants time or patience.
