Sunderland's Ambitious Loan Bid for Jack Grealish

Sunderland have made a bold move for Jack Grealish, tabling an ambitious loan offer to Manchester City that would see the Premier League champions continue to shoulder a large slice of the winger’s hefty wages, according to The Athletic.

The proposal from the Stadium of Light includes an option to buy next summer, timed to line up with the end of Grealish’s current deal at the Etihad. If City agree, it would hand the Black Cats the chance to turn a headline-grabbing loan into a permanent coup.

From Treble cornerstone to the exit lane

For Grealish, it would mark a dramatic turn in a career that not long ago ran through the heart of City’s greatest ever side. The former Aston Villa captain arrived in Manchester in a £100m deal and went on to make 159 appearances in all competitions, peaking in the Treble-winning 2022-23 campaign when he locked down the left flank and featured 50 times across the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup.

That version of Grealish felt untouchable. This one is searching for minutes.

His stock has dipped sharply over the past two seasons. By 2024-25 he had slipped to just seven league starts, the slide underlined when he was left out of the squad altogether for City’s final game of the season against Fulham. Pep Guardiola insisted the call was “nothing personal”, yet Grealish was then omitted again for the Club World Cup. The message was hard to miss.

This term has started in the same vein. The 30-year-old has been used only from the bench in both of City’s opening fixtures, coming on in the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal and again in Sunday’s 2-1 Premier League win over Bournemouth.

City’s stance has been clear for months. Reports in June indicated they were prepared to listen to both loan and permanent offers for their former record signing. Sunderland have now stepped into that space.

Rebuilding after Everton setback

Grealish is hunting regular football after a stuttering loan spell at Everton last season. Under David Moyes he managed two goals and six assists in 22 appearances before a stress fracture in his foot in January cut his campaign short.

Everton had an option to make the move permanent for around £50m. They walked away. Sunderland are trying to walk in.

For a player who once carried Aston Villa as captain and then played a central role in City’s dominance, the shift is stark. But for a club heading back into Europe, the fit has its logic.

Sunderland’s European ambition

Regis Le Bris wants experience and pedigree to anchor a Sunderland side preparing for Europa League football. Grealish, with his Champions League nights and domestic title runs, ticks that box in bold ink.

The push for the England international sits within a wider, aggressive recruitment drive. Sunderland are also working on a deal for Marseille winger Igor Paixao, with personal terms for the 26-year-old Brazilian not expected to be a stumbling block after a 12-goal season in Ligue 1. The real work lies in striking an agreement with Marseille.

The Black Cats have already moved decisively elsewhere. Thomas Meunier has arrived to add know-how at full-back, while Dayann Methalie strengthens defensive depth. In midfield, Jules Ahoka has been brought in to give Le Bris more options and energy in the centre of the pitch.

This is a squad being built with Thursday nights in Europe firmly in mind. Grealish would be the statement piece.

For Sunderland, landing Grealish would send a jolt through the Europa League field and the domestic landscape. For City, it would underline a ruthlessly pragmatic approach to a player who once symbolised their financial might.

For Grealish himself, it feels like a crossroads. From a £100m landmark signing and Treble mainstay to a bench role and now a potential move to a resurgent Sunderland, the question is no longer what he has been.

It’s where he is willing to go to become that player again.
