Sunderland Negotiates Loan Deal for Jack Grealish

Sunderland are in negotiations with Manchester City over a loan deal for Jack Grealish, with an option to buy at the end of the season, according to a report from David Ornstein of The Athletic.

The proposed deal would run into a crucial moment in Grealish’s career. His contract at the Etihad is due to expire next year, and talks between the clubs include a clause that could allow Sunderland to make the move permanent once that deal runs down. Sunderland also want City to continue paying a portion of his wages to make the numbers work.

This is not a bolt from the blue. Grealish has been expected to move on from Manchester City for some time, whether on loan or permanently. Under Enzo Maresca, his role has shrunk even further. The new City boss has only turned to him twice this season – in the Community Shield against Arsenal and at home to Bournemouth – a clear signal he is no longer seen as a regular starter.

The contrast with his price tag is stark. City paid a staggering €117 million to sign Grealish in 2021, a marquee arrival meant to define an era. He has not exactly failed: multiple league titles, a Champions League triumph in 2023, and 159 appearances for a side that has dominated English football. But the story has shifted. His minutes have ebbed away year on year, even as the trophies piled up.

Pep Guardiola, who oversaw most of Grealish’s time in Manchester, repeatedly stressed that leaving him out was never personal. The numbers told their own story. As City evolved and competition intensified, Grealish slipped from guaranteed starter to rotational option, and then to the fringes.

Last season, the club sent him on loan to Everton, where he briefly looked like a player reborn. In 22 matches he produced two goals and six assists, knitting together attacks and offering the sort of technical control that once made him the most expensive English player in history. That momentum was cut short in January by a stress fracture in his foot, forcing him into a long rehabilitation spell and halting any late surge back into City’s plans.

Now Sunderland sense an opening. A club looking to accelerate their project see a chance to build around a proven Premier League creator, if they can navigate the finances and his fitness. The option-to-buy structure, tied to the end of his City contract, gives them a potential bargain route to a player who once commanded a nine-figure fee.

And Grealish is not the only ambitious target on their list. Sky Sports report that Sunderland are also pushing to sign Igor Paixão from Olympique Marseille, with a bid already lodged for the Brazilian. One eye is on Grealish, another on Paixão – a double move that would radically reshape their attacking options.

If Sunderland can land even one of them, it would signal intent. If they land both, it starts to look like a statement about where they believe they belong in the Premier League hierarchy.
