Sunderland Close to Signing Malick Fofana for £30m

Sunderland are closing a statement summer with a statement signing.

The club have agreed a deal worth just under £30m for Lyon winger Malick Fofana, a move that underlines the scale of their ambition ahead of a first European campaign in 51 years.

The 21-year-old Belgium forward is travelling to England for a medical and is expected to sign a five-year contract, committing his peak years to the Wearside project. Sunderland will pay an initial £25.6m, with a further £4.3m potentially due in add-ons.

This is not a signing made in a vacuum. Arsenal tried to land Fofana, but the Premier League champions failed to reach an agreement with Lyon over the fee. Sunderland did. They stepped in, met the French club’s demands and moved quickly to close the deal.

Fofana, who came through at KAA Gent before joining Lyon in 2024, is understood to be excited by the prospect of leading Sunderland into the Europa League. For a club that has waited more than half a century to return to European competition, that matters. For a 21-year-old on the rise, it is a stage and a responsibility.

And the rebuild does not stop with one marquee winger.

Fofana is set to link up with Kevin Danso, with the Austria defender due to arrive from Tottenham on an initial loan that includes an option to buy. Sunderland have already added experience and depth at the back with the arrivals of Thomas Meunier and Dayann Methalie, while midfielder Jules Ahoka has come in to strengthen the spine.

All of this follows a seventh-place finish in their first season back in the top flight – a campaign that secured European football and reset expectations around the Stadium of Light.
