Swansea City’s Championship Aspirations: Vitor Matos on Competing with the Best

Vitor Matos insists Swansea City’s flying start to the season is proof they can stand toe-to-toe with anyone in the Championship.

Swansea surged back up to second place on Saturday, level on points with leaders West Ham and separated only by goal difference, after a controlled 3-1 win over a Burnley side already feeling the strain of the campaign.

Adam Idah, Moussa Yeo and Zan Vipotnik all struck as the Swans delivered exactly the reaction Matos wanted following their first league setback of the season at Southampton in midweek. The defeat on the south coast had raised the first questions of his reign. The response at home was emphatic.

The performance did more than restore momentum. It hardened the belief inside the dressing room that this remodelled Swansea squad belongs among the division’s front-runners.

After the game, Matos claimed he genuinely did not know Swansea’s exact position in the table. What he does care about, he made clear, is the level his side have already reached.

"I think we have a team who can compete against every team in the league," the head coach said, underlining the standard he expects week after week.

"That's what we want. When we can compete against everyone, we know that on that day, at that particular time, we can have a proper performance and beat any opponent.

"If that happens all the time, we don't know, but we will work our socks off for that."

The message is blunt: no guarantees, no grand promises – just a squad convinced it can live with anyone in the Championship, and a coach demanding they prove it every weekend.
