Szoboszlai's Last-Minute Penalty Secures Draw for Liverpool
Dominik Szoboszlai struck in the ninth minute of stoppage time to salvage a point for Andoni Iraola on his first Premier League game in charge of Liverpool, capping a chaotic 2-2 draw with Newcastle United at St James’ Park.
Newcastle led twice. They failed to finish the job twice.
Iraola escapes with a point
For long spells, this was not the statement performance Liverpool’s new era had been hoping for. They trailed 1-0 and 2-1, struggled to control the game, and relied on Newcastle’s defensive lapses to stay alive.
"It's not the result you wanted before the game, but obviously finishing, scoring in the last minute, it gives you a better taste," Iraola said afterwards. "I don't think we deserve to lose the game today.
"I value the effort from the players, they never gave up, and at the end it arrived, and we could recover at least one point."
That resilience, rather than fluency, defined Liverpool’s afternoon.
Anthony Elanga had put Newcastle ahead, punishing Liverpool in a first half where the visitors rarely found their rhythm. The atmosphere turned edgy, the home crowd sensing a statement win to open a season overshadowed by a summer exodus.
Gakpo pounces, Newcastle switch off
The game tilted after the break. Newcastle’s back line, so compact in the first half, suddenly stepped off. The hesitation cost them.
Cody Gakpo took full advantage, finding the space he had been denied earlier and levelling the match as Newcastle failed to close him down. It was a soft concession, and it changed the mood.
Newcastle, though, refused to fold. They pushed again, reclaimed the lead, and as the clock ticked into stoppage time, they looked set to hand Matthias Jaissle a dream start in the Premier League.
Then came the moment that ripped it away.
Hall’s late error and a “soft” decision
With the game almost done, Lewis Hall clipped Victor Munoz in the box. It was a clumsy, needless challenge with Liverpool running out of ideas. The referee pointed to the spot. St James’ Park froze.
Szoboszlai stepped up and buried the penalty, silencing the home crowd and turning what had looked like a statement Newcastle win into a gut-punch draw.
"It's rough, especially 30 seconds before the end of the game, but that's a huge step for us. That's the mentality we need to have through the season," said Newcastle forward Yoane Wissa, who still saw positives amid the frustration.
"The manager (Matthias Jaissle) came three weeks ago and gave us a lot of information, now we show on the pitch we are ready for the season. We needed this win to make a statement, but in the end we draw. We have so much to work on."
Jaissle did not hide his irritation with the decisive call.
"It was indeed a game of mixed feelings, especially in the end when you get a decision, two points away, it is really hard to digest," he said. "For me it is a really soft penalty as you call it here, if you give these penalties then you need to give a lot in the season."
New Newcastle, raw but promising
Strip away the late drama and the bigger picture on Tyneside is complicated but not bleak.
Many Newcastle fans would have taken a point before kick-off, given the scale of the squad turnover and the modest expectations swirling around a side stripped of several key names. Instead, they walked away feeling short-changed, which says plenty about how they performed for most of the afternoon.
"But there is also a lot of confidence and we are really proud of what we saw, the young lads were doing an amazing job with all the challenges of a transition period," Jaissle added. "This was special, already delivering on a high level and it makes us proud. (Newcastle have) a really good base to build on."
Liverpool, too, leave with mixed emotions. They showed heart, not control. Fight, not fluency. Iraola avoided defeat, but he also received a sharp reminder of how much work lies ahead.
For Newcastle, the question now is simple: was this a missed opportunity, or the first clear sign that a rebuilt team can still punch at this level?
