World Cup 2026: Updated List of Eliminated Teams
The 2026 World Cup offers more nations a chance to reach the knockout rounds than ever before. The tournament has expanded from 32 to 48 teams, adding an extra knockout round. As a result, all but 16 teams will advance beyond the group stage.
Despite this expansion, many teams still face early exits and disappointment, especially those expected to perform well. Below is the latest list of teams whose journeys in the 2026 World Cup have ended.
Current Eliminations
Because of the expanded format, few teams are officially eliminated before the final group stage matches. Eight of the best third-place teams will join the top two from each group to move on, and these rankings only become clear after all third matchday games finish.
As of June 23, four teams are confirmed out of the tournament.
Haiti, Turkey, Ghana, and Tunisia were among the first nations to bow out. A key factor in early eliminations involves new tie-breaker rules. Teams tied on points are now ranked based on head-to-head results rather than goal difference alone.
Take Haiti as an example: they lost 1-0 to Scotland and 3-0 to Brazil. Even if they finish with three points, they cannot surpass Brazil or Morocco in Group C. If they tie with Scotland on points, Scotland ranks higher due to winning their direct encounter.
Group Stage Tie-Breakers Explained
FIFA's tie-breaking rules for the group stage, confirmed in April, work as follows when teams share equal points:
- Head-to-head results between the tied teams
- Goal difference from those head-to-head matches
- Goals scored in those head-to-head games
- If still tied, overall group goal difference
- Overall goals scored in the group
- Team conduct score based on cards received
- FIFA ranking as a last resort
Third-Place Teams Can Still Advance
The 2026 World Cup introduces a twist: the top eight third-place teams across groups also qualify for the Round of 32. These teams are ranked using:
- Group stage points
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
- Team conduct score
- FIFA ranking
Expanded Format Means More Games
Since 1998, the World Cup featured 32 teams. The jump to 48 teams in 2026 adds four extra groups and an additional knockout round. The champions will play eight matches instead of seven, making the tournament longer and more demanding.
