Thilo Kehrer Joins Ajax: A New Chapter in His Career

Thilo Kehrer didn’t just change clubs on Deadline Day. He jumped into the chaos.

The German centre-back signed for Ajax at the very end of the window and admitted to ESPN it was a completely new experience. “That was a first for me. Very exciting, it was different. I’m happy to be here,” he said, still sounding like the adrenaline hadn’t fully worn off.

A move done at full speed

Kehrer only heard of Ajax’s interest the day before the deal was completed. From there, everything accelerated.

“Everything happened very quickly: talks with Jordi (Cruyff), with the coach. After that, the clubs wrapped it up. The next day I was on my way.”

No drawn-out saga. No weeks of speculation. One conversation, then another, and suddenly he was on a plane to Amsterdam.

Not long after the move was confirmed, a familiar name popped up on his phone: Marc-André ter Stegen, currently on loan from FC Barcelona. The message wasn’t a scouting report. Kehrer already knew exactly what he was walking into.

“I didn’t need to ask much. I already knew Ajax very well. I played for Schalke, not far from here. Everything was already very clear.”

Drawn by ambition

This wasn’t a blind leap. Kehrer weighed up the switch carefully and kept circling back to one thing: ambition.

“The most important thing for me is to be competitive and to play for titles, to have the ambition to win trophies and matches. That is possible here. The foundation is there, now we have to make it work.”

Ajax’s promise of a team built to challenge, not just participate, tipped the balance. The club’s identity did the rest.

Arriving from AS Monaco, Kehrer was immediately struck by his new surroundings. “The scale, the stadium, the atmosphere and the pure football. The club have their own DNA.”

Contract now, future later

Kehrer has signed on in Amsterdam until mid-2027. Beyond that, nothing is guaranteed, and he’s not pretending otherwise.

“I don’t know yet. We’ll see how the season goes, but I’m certainly open to it. There are still many matches until next year. We’ll see.”

For now, the focus is on this season, this project, this chance to anchor a defence at a club that expects to win.

Familiar faces, faster start

Settling in has been eased by the presence of a few old colleagues. Kehrer already knew Caio Henrique and Simon Adringa from his time at Monaco, and that mattered in those first days in a new dressing room.

“It makes it easier when you have familiar faces. They help you integrate. You already have a connection. It was nice to see them again.”

He also knows Marc ter Stegen and Julian Brandt from Bundesliga battles and the German national team. Those shared experiences shorten the distance between past and present.

Ajax have their new centre-back. Kehrer has his new stage. Now comes the real test: can that foundation he talked about carry them back to the trophies he came here to chase?
