Thomas Helmer Recalls Fiery Clash With Uli Hoeneß

Uli Hoeneß stepped onto the Sport Bild gala stage on Monday night to collect the Legend Award. Out in front, under the lights and cameras on the red carpet, another Bayern face from the past stole a slice of the show.

Thomas Helmer told a story that stopped people in their tracks.

“He sometimes did wild things as well,” the former defender recalled, speaking about Hoeneß. “When he gets emotional, I experienced him differently in the dressing room too. We almost had a fight once as well. I wanted to beat up Uli Hoeneß.”

Not the usual red-carpet small talk.

A Frozen Champions League Night

Helmer took everyone back to a bitterly cold European evening in Munich.

“It was a Champions League match, I think against Kyiv. Old Olympic Stadium, felt like minus 17 degrees, 13,000 spectators – but live on television,” he said.

Bayern led 1–0 at the break, but the scoreline hid the chaos. “We were 1–0 up at half-time, but I think Kyiv ran through on our goal three times, they just did not get the ball in.”

That was enough to set Hoeneß off.

Then, as Helmer tells it, the club boss “went crazy: ‘What are you playing at, what are you serving up to the spectators? This is an outrage for Bayern Munich. Millions are watching, no matter how many are here in the stadium… even if it is cold.’”

Helmer walked past him. Hoeneß didn’t let him escape.

“Then he yelled: ‘and you’re running around like my grandfather!’”

Cup in Hand, Temper Lost

Helmer’s pride took the hit. His temper answered.

He grabbed the nearest thing he could find. “I then took a cup of electrolytes and wanted to throw it at his head,” he admitted. The shot missed. “But I did not hit him, I hit the wall.”

Hoeneß read the room quickly. “Then he was smart enough to go to the physios in the dressing room and hide.”

A dressing room on the verge of boiling over, a manager under pressure, a defender seeing red – classic Bayern drama, long before social media would have devoured it.

From Near-Fight to Lifelong Trust

By the next morning, the storm had passed.

“The next day we then had a completely open conversation. Uli never held a grudge,” Helmer said. The incident, instead of driving a wedge between them, became part of a relationship built on honesty and confrontation.

Today, Helmer talks about Hoeneß with unmistakable admiration.

“There are two people in the world I would go to if I had a problem. No matter whether private, financial or health-related – one of them is Uli Hoeneß!”

A night meant to honour Hoeneß’s legacy ended up offering the perfect illustration of it: emotional, uncompromising, occasionally explosive – and, for those who know him best, utterly dependable when it really matters.
