Tottenham's Loan Move for Mudryk: A Deadline-Day Twist

Tottenham Hotspur are on the brink of one of the most unexpected deals of the window, closing in on a loan move for Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk, with an option to buy set at around £75 million.

The 25-year-old has not kicked a competitive ball for well over a year. His last appearance for Chelsea came in December 2024, before a positive doping test led to his suspension and an abrupt halt to his career. Now cleared after the charges were dropped, Mudryk is free to play again – just not at Stamford Bridge.

Enzo Maresca has made it clear there is no place for him in his Chelsea plans. With the squad reshaped and competition fierce in the wide areas, the Ukrainian has been deemed surplus to requirements. That opened the door, and Tottenham have walked straight through it.

From Doping Exile to North London Lifeline

Spurs moved quickly. The winger underwent his medical on Tuesday morning, with an official announcement expected later on deadline day once the final paperwork is complete.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, speaking on GIVEMESPORT’s Market Madness podcast, said the deal is all but done and that Mudryk will put pen to paper on his Tottenham contract on Tuesday afternoon.

“Yes, Mykhailo Mudryk will be a Tottenham player, he will sign his contract at Tottenham in the next two hours,” Romano said. “Loan deal with an option to buy clause at £75million. He did his medical in the morning, so everything okay.

“Mudryk is going to be new winger for Tottenham, and as you said, a big change of plans because they wanted to sign Cody Gakpo at the beginning, then they considered the possibility of a deal with Iliman Ndiaye joining Tottenham and Richarlison going to Everton, but there was no agreement between Richarlison and Everton on personal terms.

“So there were some complications, and that's why Tottenham decided to go for the easiest option in Mykhailo Mudryk. It's a loan deal with an option to buy set at £75million that Tottenham would pay the salary of the player, and there is also a loan fee involved in the deal.”

Spurs’ Left-Side Puzzle Finds a Surprise Piece

Tottenham have been hunting a left-sided attacker all summer. The need has been obvious. New signing Savinho can operate off that flank, but the expectation is that the Brazilian will be used mainly on the opposite side, where Spurs are short of natural options.

The recruitment plan initially pointed elsewhere. Cody Gakpo was the primary target, but Liverpool ultimately chose to keep the Dutchman. Attention then swung to Iliman Ndiaye, with a complex potential chain involving Richarlison heading to Everton. That idea collapsed when Richarlison and Everton failed to agree personal terms.

Just as the search threatened to drift into deadline-day desperation, Mudryk’s name suddenly shot to the top of the list on Monday evening. A player who had been frozen out, written off in some quarters, instantly became the “easiest option” in a market short on elite wide players.

The structure of the deal suits Spurs. A loan now, a hefty but optional £75 million purchase clause later, Tottenham covering his wages and paying a loan fee to Chelsea. If Mudryk reignites his career, they have first refusal. If he struggles after so long out, they can walk away.

A Debut on the Horizon

Mudryk could make his Spurs debut as early as Saturday, away at Nottingham Forest. That would be a rapid reintroduction to Premier League intensity after such a long absence.

Realistically, Tottenham are expected to ease him back. Match rhythm cannot be manufactured on the training pitch, especially after more than a year out of competitive action. But even a cameo would mark a significant moment: the end of a long, uncertain spell on the sidelines and the start of a high-stakes audition in north London.

For Spurs, it is a gamble with clear upside. For Mudryk, it is something bigger – a second chance at the level he was tipped to dominate.
