Tottenham's Transfer Business Not Over Yet: Focus on Cody Gakpo

Roberto De Zerbi has made it clear: Tottenham’s transfer business is not done yet.

With the deadline looming on Tuesday at 11pm, the Spurs head coach wants “one more player” through the door – and the focus is locked on Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo.

Tottenham are understood to be pushing hard for the Dutchman and are ready to ramp up their efforts in the final days of the window. De Zerbi, speaking on Friday, admitted even he has been taken aback by the scale of the club’s summer overhaul.

“I didn't expect a transfer window like we have done,” he said. “I think we can do one player more in one specific position.”

That “specific position” was the subject of discussion at a club dinner on Thursday night, when De Zerbi sat down with the ownership and hierarchy – Johan Lange and Vinai Venkatesham among them – to align on the final steps of the window.

“Yesterday we went to dinner with the owners, Johan and Vinai and we spoke about this,” De Zerbi revealed. “All of us are on the same page and a very good connection.”

The message is clear: Spurs are still active, and they are prepared for a frantic finish to the window. Incoming business is on the agenda, but so is trimming the squad.

Tottenham expect movement right up to the deadline, with several players still open to leaving. De Zerbi has already drawn a firm line with his squad.

“I've been very clear with all the players: if you speak clearly you can't expect surprises,” he said. “The players who wanted to leave have left. We maybe have some players who want to leave and they are waiting, we are waiting for an offer.”

This is not just a rebuild on paper for De Zerbi. He framed it as something more personal, more emotional.

“You have to feel proud to stay here. It's an emotional project we are building with new players.”

One of the unresolved stories is Pape Matar Sarr. The midfielder has attracted interest during the window and, notably, has not featured in either of Spurs’ first two games of the season.

His absence has fuelled speculation about a possible late move, and De Zerbi did little to close the door on that possibility.

“Pape is good [fitness-wise],” he confirmed. “We have to see in the last days of the transfer market what can happen with him.”

Tottenham are heading into the final hours of the window with intent – and with a head coach demanding that anyone who stays buys fully into the “emotional project” he insists is only just beginning.
