Trabzonspor Parts Ways with Head Coach Fatih Tekke

Trabzonspor have drawn a line under the Fatih Tekke era, accepting the head coach’s “emotional” resignation days after initially trying to talk him out of walking away.

Tekke, who steered the club to a third‑place finish in the Super Lig last season, offered to step down in the wake of a bruising Europa League exit. Trabzonspor were dismantled 5‑0 on aggregate by Hungarian side Ferencvaros in the play‑off round, a defeat that cut deep at a club that measures itself against European nights.

On Friday, the hierarchy pushed back. They rejected his resignation and framed his decision as one taken under the “intense emotional impact” of that European collapse, hinting they still believed in the 48‑year‑old’s project.

The mood has shifted.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Trabzonspor confirmed they had reached a “mutual understanding” with Tekke and agreed to part company “in line with Trabzonspor’s interests and long‑term objectives”.

The club did not just close the door; it paused to acknowledge what had been built. Over roughly 18 months in charge, Tekke “brought significant value to Trabzonspor”, the statement read, highlighting both sporting progress and financial gains during his tenure.

The standout moment came in the cup. By bringing the Turkish Cup back “to our museum”, as the club put it, Tekke added another line to his personal history with Trabzonspor and delivered a tangible trophy in a period dominated by pressure and expectation.

The board also underlined his role in developing the players brought into the squad during his spell, a nod to the longer-term imprint he leaves behind even as results in Europe forced a reckoning.

Crucially, the statement stressed Tekke’s own stance. The coach, it said, made clear he would “never allow his presence to harm Trabzonspor in any way”. From that point, both sides accepted that “drawing a new roadmap, prioritising the club’s interests above all else, had become unavoidable”.

With that, the separation was sealed. Trabzonspor signed off with thanks for his “efforts, his dedicated work, the successes he delivered, and the value he added” to the club.

The search now begins for the next figure to carry that roadmap forward.
