Tragic Death of Aoibheann Clarke Shakes Taghmon Community

The floodlights in Taghmon were still burning when the silence fell.

A Girls Minor Division 6 Shield final, a routine Tuesday evening in a Wexford GAA ground, turned in an instant from the noise of teenage sport to the numb quiet of shock and disbelief. Sixteen-year-old Aoibheann Clarke, playing for Taghmon Camross GAA, collapsed on the pitch during injury time. Her father was running the line as a match official, watching the game unfold, when the unthinkable happened.

What followed was a desperate fight to save her.

Spectators and officials rushed to her side. Chest compressions began on the grass where moments earlier she had been chasing the ball. An advanced paramedic arrived, an ambulance just minutes behind. Gardaí and fire services moved into place around the scene. Overhead, an air ambulance circled, ready if needed. A defibrillator was deployed several times as those on duty and those in the crowd did everything they could.

Players from both teams were led away to the dressing rooms, their final abruptly abandoned, their focus no longer on a result but on a teammate and opponent fighting for life.

Aoibheann was eventually lifted into the back of an ambulance and rushed to hospital. Her teammates stayed at the club, waiting for news, mentors and friends trying to hold a group of young players together as the night stretched out. The update they dreaded finally came. She had passed away in hospital.

There had been no warning signs known to those closest to her in the game. Her mentors, who later spoke of being unaware of any underlying medical conditions, described her simply as “a really talented girl” – a phrase that, in the hours since, has carried the weight of all the promise that will now go unfulfilled.

On Wednesday, Taghmon/Camross GAA paid tribute in a statement that captured the depth of their loss and the breadth of the response on the night.

They called Aoibheann a “cherished member” of their minor team and offered “sincere gratitude to everyone who responded so quickly and compassionately to the emergency” – from spectators who rushed to help to first responders, ambulance crews, Gardaí and the fire service, all recognised for their “professionalism, care, and support”.

The club’s words then turned to those now left behind: “Our thoughts and prayers remain with our player’s family, friends, teammates, coaches, and all who knew and loved her. We ask that everyone respects the family’s privacy as they grieve this devastating loss.”

Aoibheann’s sporting life stretched beyond Gaelic football. She was also a familiar name in local soccer, lining out for All Blacks AFC and Wexford FC, where her ability had already begun to stand out. Only a few weeks ago, she helped Wexford FC lift the FAI Women’s U19 Inter-League title, another step on what looked like a rising path in two codes.

Now, that medal, those matches, and the ordinary evenings at training carry a different meaning for those who shared them with her.

In Taghmon and across Wexford’s sporting circles, jerseys have been set aside, training sessions paused, and dressing rooms turned into places of quiet reflection. The result of a minor shield final no longer matters. The people who were there will remember instead the frantic efforts on the pitch, the long wait for news, and the moment they learned that a teammate, opponent, and friend would not be coming back.

The community has begun to close ranks around Aoibheann’s family, offering what support it can in the face of a loss that feels both sudden and incomprehensible. In a county where GAA and soccer often define the rhythm of the week, one teenager’s death has cut across all codes and colours.

The games will eventually resume in Taghmon. When they do, they will be played in the shadow of a young life that ended on a pitch where she loved to play, in a jersey she wore with pride, in a town that will not forget her name.
