Tyreece Campbell Shines as Charlton Athletic Beats Derby County 2-1

Tyreece Campbell’s sharp start to the season rolled on at The Valley, his late winner dragging Charlton Athletic past Derby County 2-1 and deepening an already bruising week for the visitors.

The 22-year-old struck in the 80th minute, whipping a precise finish in with his weaker left foot to turn a tight, anxious afternoon into one of those early-season markers. Two goals already this campaign; just one shy of his entire tally from last season. Different player, different mood.

Derby’s week gets worse

Derby arrived in south London under a cloud after Turki Alalshikh’s proposed takeover collapsed on Monday. On the pitch, though, they initially looked composed enough, especially once they had ridden out Charlton’s bright opening.

Derby slowly took the sting out of the game and began to dictate possession. The first real warning for Charlton came when Sammie Szmodics met Joe Ward’s low cross with a clean first-time strike, only for Will Mannion to beat it away.

Charlton did not heed it. Moments later, Szmodics found space inside the area and this time made it count, finishing from close range after being picked out by James Collins’ strike partner, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing? No – by Conor Washington? The article states simply “Morris”, and it was his pass that unlocked the defence. One chance spurned, the next buried. Derby in front at the halfway point.

Charlton hit back

The goal jolted Charlton. They finished the first half pressing higher and asking questions of a Derby back line suddenly less comfortable.

Danny McNamara saw a goal-bound effort blocked by Curtis Taylor’s sliding challenge, while Campbell almost squeezed one in at the near post, only for Zetterstrom to stand tall and save with his legs. When Carey tumbled under a challenge from Lewis Travis inside the box, The Valley roared for a penalty. Referee Ben Speedie waved it away.

Szmodics, who had appeared to be carrying a niggle from the warm-up, lasted only nine minutes into the second half before being forced off, with new signing Alex Mowatt sent on in his place. Derby lost their goalscorer; Charlton sensed an opening.

The equaliser arrived on 61 minutes and it came from the captain for the day. Lloyd Jones, fresh from signing a new two-year contract on Friday, rose to meet Grant’s delicate, dinked cross from the left side of the area and powered his header home. A centre-back’s goal, direct and decisive, and The Valley erupted.

The game opened up. Mannion, uncertain under high balls, then produced a big save, flinging himself low to his left to tip Oscar Fraulo’s 20-yard drive around the post. Derby still carried a threat. But the momentum had swung.

Campbell decides it

Campbell had been Charlton’s liveliest outlet throughout, stretching Derby’s back line with his runs and constantly demanding the ball. When his moment came, he did not waste it.

Cutting in and striking off his left, he delivered a crisp, controlled finish that left Zetterstrom beaten and turned the match on its head. For the first time all afternoon, Charlton led. For Campbell, it felt like the start of something.

Derby threw what they had left at the game. Eight minutes of stoppage time went up, and nerves tightened around The Valley. Max Johnston whipped in one last dangerous cross, but James Collins’ fellow forward, this time “Morris” again, could only direct his effort straight at Mannion. No late twist. No rescue act.

Charlton held firm, banked the points, and walked off to the sound of early-season optimism. Derby trudged away from a draining week with nothing but questions and a long road to steady themselves.
