Before the 2026-27 Champions League league phase begins, UEFA has introduced two notable rule changes. The final teams will qualify through play-offs scheduled for August 25 and 26, with Matchday 1 kicking off on September 8. The season's final is set for June 5 at Atletico Madrid’s Metropolitano Stadium.

Paris Saint-Germain aims to be the first club since Real Madrid under Zinedine Zidane (2016-2018) to secure three consecutive Champions League titles. PSG, who claimed their maiden European crown in 2025, have established themselves as Europe's dominant force under Luis Enrique, regarded currently as the top manager worldwide.

Details of the Two Rule Changes

Per reports from The Mirror, the same amendments will apply across UEFA’s major club tournaments including the Europa League and Conference League.

  • Yellow Card Suspensions: Players will now face a one-match suspension after accumulating four yellow cards instead of three.
  • Match Clock Displays: UEFA has lifted its previous restriction that prohibited stadium clocks from showing time beyond 45 or 90 minutes during European nights. Organizers can now display continuous playing time during added time periods, similar to a change adopted by the Premier League two years ago.

The updated rule states: "The added time for each half must be shown as additional minutes, not as continuous playing time (i.e. 45 + x, 90 + y). This also applies to extra time (105 + x, 120 + y)."

English Clubs and Betting Favorites

Five English teams have secured spots in this season’s Champions League: Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Aston Villa, and Liverpool. Meanwhile, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, and Sunderland will compete in the Europa League, with Brighton entering the Conference League.

Bookmakers favor reigning champions PSG at 5-1 odds to win again. They are closely followed by Bayern Munich and Arsenal, both at 6-1. Barcelona, Manchester City, and Real Madrid share 7-1 odds, while Liverpool sits at 10-1 and Manchester United at 16-1.
