Vinicius Jr Faces Uncertain Future at Real Madrid Amid Arsenal Interest

Vinicius Jr will walk back through the doors at Valdebebas on Monday, but the sense of permanence has vanished.

Jose Mourinho confirmed after Real Madrid’s 2-2 draw with Fiorentina in Austria that the Brazilian will report for pre-season as planned, alongside Brahim Diaz and new signing Bernardo Silva. On paper, it is a routine return from holiday. In reality, it could be the beginning of the end.

Vinicius has been away since Brazil’s World Cup exit, a jarring 2-1 defeat to Norway in the round of 16 on July 5. While he has rested, the clock on his Madrid future has kept ticking. He is now into the final 12 months of his contract at the Bernabeu, and the stand-off over a renewal has dragged on long enough to tempt predators.

Arsenal are circling.

The Independent reported over the weekend that the Premier League champions have made significant progress towards what would be the most audacious transfer in their history, having agreed the outline of a personal deal with the 26-year-old’s camp. The message from north London is clear: if Madrid leave the door open, Arsenal will walk through it.

Madrid, for their part, are no longer pretending this is a simple negotiation. ESPN reported that the club are open to the idea of Vinicius leaving if no agreement can be found, with the hierarchy refusing to improve their latest contract offer. The stalemate has hardened into a test of will.

All this plays out against a turbulent summer in the Spanish capital. Madrid’s own recruitment drive has been aggressive, if not entirely smooth. A move for RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, valued at more than £100million, has stalled. The club remain locked on to Manchester City midfielder Rodri, even after already landing Marc Cucurella, Denzel Dumfries, Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate and Carlos Espi.

Something has to give. If Madrid cannot unlock Diomande and will not bend on Vinicius, the market may end up forcing their hand.

Across the Channel, Arsenal are not waiting around. While they push on with their pursuit of Vinicius, they are also closing in on his Brazil team-mate Bruno Guimaraes. The Newcastle midfielder is widely expected to undergo a medical on Monday ahead of an £80m move that is now close to completion.

Like Vinicius, Guimaraes had been due to rejoin his current club after the World Cup, flying back into Newcastle’s pre-season camp in La Manga, Spain. That plan appears to have been ripped up. Instead of unpacking in Spain, he looks set to be preparing for life under Mikel Arteta.

Newcastle, already braced for the loss of their midfield fulcrum, have moved quickly. They have identified Inter Milan’s Petar Sucic as a potential replacement and have already confirmed the £25m signing of Czech Republic goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek from Braga.

So Monday becomes more than just a date on the calendar. Vinicius Jr will step back into Madrid’s training complex with his future unresolved, his name on Arsenal’s wish list and his contract running down. On the same day, Bruno Guimaraes is expected to edge towards the Emirates, another piece in a bold project that refuses to stand still.
