Virgil van Dijk on Cody Gakpo's Future at Liverpool

Virgil van Dijk has no interest in dancing around the subject. Asked if he wants Cody Gakpo to stay at Liverpool amid serious interest from Manchester City, the captain needed just four words to set the tone.

“What do you think?”

The question was rhetorical, the message anything but. City are in active talks over an £80 million move for the Dutch forward, with The Athletic reporting that the Premier League champions have become Gakpo’s preferred destination after Tottenham also made their move. Liverpool, though, are digging in – at least for now.

Van Dijk draws a line

Speaking after Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Nottingham, Van Dijk was crystal clear about where he stands on the possibility of losing his compatriot.

“He’s a top-class player. I think we should keep our quality players,”

he said, before expanding on the personal side of the situation.

“We’ll see what the next few days bring. I want him to stay not just because he’s a top-class player, but also because he’s a friend of mine. He’s very important to us.”

That “we’ll see” hangs over Liverpool’s final days of the window. City are pushing. Gakpo is listening. But Liverpool have their own conditions.

Liverpool’s stance: no exit without a replacement

Bradley Barcola is already in the building, undergoing a medical ahead of his move from Paris Saint-Germain. His arrival gives Liverpool fresh pace and threat out wide, but it does not automatically open the door for Gakpo to leave.

The club will not sanction Gakpo’s departure in the next 48 hours unless another winger is signed before the deadline. Barcola is a reinforcement, not a green light. Liverpool want depth, not another hole to fill.

the defender said.

“I remember a goal he scored against Chelsea in the Champions League last season. If he comes here, he’ll be welcomed with open arms.”

That memory, that specific reference, underlined the respect Barcola already commands in the dressing room. This isn’t a speculative project in Van Dijk’s eyes; it’s a player ready to impact now.

He then widened the lens to the club as a whole.

“I don’t think there’s any doubt that a club like Liverpool is a very attractive destination for very good players. This is one of the biggest clubs in the world. We all know we’re going through something of a transitional phase. Either you want to be part of it or you don’t.”

No sugar-coating, no pretending this is a settled, finished squad. It’s a rebuild, and Van Dijk is challenging players – current and prospective – to buy into it.

“Adding quality to the squad always makes a difference. We’ll see what the next few days bring. After Tuesday, we have to fight for everything without any regrets.”
