Virgil van Dijk Praises Ndukwe's Talent Amid Loan Move

Virgil van Dijk has seen enough. In a few pre-season outings, 18-year-old centre-back Ndukwe has convinced Liverpool’s captain he belongs at the highest level – even as bureaucracy forces him out of Anfield for now.

Van Dijk hails “big talent” forced to leave

Ndukwe, signed earlier this year after a deal with Austria Wien, has been a constant presence in Andoni Iraola’s pre-season plans. The teenager has started against Sunderland, Wrexham, Leeds United and Monaco, looking every bit the modern Liverpool defender: aggressive, composed, eager to learn.

Van Dijk has been watching closely.

“Obviously I saw the games in pre-season in America,” the Dutchman said. “He’s a big talent, big guy and he wants to learn and I had a brief conversation with him, especially in the last couple of days. For him it is just progressing.

“I know he has to go on loan I think so let’s see where he ends up. Yeah [it’s a shame he has to move on loan].”

The problem is not football. It is paperwork.

GBE rules push Ndukwe towards Europe

Ndukwe has yet to secure the Governing Body Endorsement (GBE) from the FA that he needs for a work visa. To qualify, a player must reach 15 points across several performance categories. The teenager does not have them yet.

So, despite impressing the Liverpool staff and senior players, he has to leave.

“I don’t know exactly what the rules are, but the matter of fact is that he has to go on loan and wherever he goes, he needs to learn, get better and be ready when he comes back to hopefully stay there,” Van Dijk said.

Interest is not an issue. According to The Athletic, Ndukwe is weighing strong offers from across Europe, with clubs in the Bundesliga, Portugal and Denmark all registering their intent. A move to a higher-ranked league would not only test him at a better level, it would also accelerate his points tally and clear the path for a Liverpool return in 2027.

For now, Anfield gets only a glimpse of a defender its captain clearly rates.

Araujo settles, Jacquet waits

Ndukwe is not the only new face Van Dijk has been assessing at the AXA Training Centre.

Ronald Araujo, on loan from Barcelona, has already been welcomed into the dressing room by the skipper, who has wasted no time integrating another high-profile centre-back into the group.

At the other end of the spectrum is Jeremy Jacquet, currently sidelined and yet to make an impact on the pitch. Van Dijk has still made sure the young defender feels part of it.

“I’ve not seen any of [Jacquet]. I’ve spoken to him. I’ve seen him walking around and we have conversations,” he said. “I’m not a doctor, so I don’t know exactly the situation, but I have a feeling this week he could be back on the pitch, and hopefully as soon as possible.”

Liverpool’s defensive rebuild, then, is happening on parallel tracks: one loanee settling in, one prospect recovering, another being pushed out on loan by regulations rather than footballing judgement.

Munoz brings raw pace to the attack

At the other end of the pitch, Victor Munoz has wasted no time making an impression of his own.

Signed from Osasuna in a £34.5m deal, the attacker only recently made his first appearance, but his training-ground impact has already been noted by the senior core of the squad. His pace has added a new edge to Liverpool’s attack as pre-season winds down.

“He started [training] also on Wednesday,” Van Dijk said. “He is very fast and it has been good to see the kind of quality he can bring to the club, and I think he had a great reception. It is just for him to carry that on to the next.”

One youngster heading out to build his case. One marquee forward arriving at full tilt. A new centre-back on loan and another close to stepping back onto the grass.

Liverpool’s summer is not just about signings and departures on a spreadsheet. It is about whether talents like Ndukwe return in 2027 ready to stay for good – and whether the players already through the door can turn early promise into something far more substantial when the real games begin.
