West Ham Urges Fans to Stop Offensive Chant Against Manor Solomon
West Ham have issued a strong appeal to their own fans to drop an "offensive and divisive" chant aimed at new signing Manor Solomon.
The song, which the club says carried an "anti-Palestine message", was heard from a section of the away end during last Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Burnley at Turf Moor, West Ham’s opening game of the Championship season.
Solomon, an Israel international winger, joined from Tottenham this summer after previous loan spells at Fulham and Leeds. He has been capped 49 times by his country, won three league titles with Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine, impressed during his stint at Fulham and helped Leeds win the Championship in 2024-25.
With their first home league game coming up on Saturday against Charlton, West Ham moved early to address the issue. In a statement released ahead of the fixture, the club reminded supporters that "each and every supporter is an ambassador" and stressed the responsibility to "represent the club in the right way".
They underlined that the club’s diverse fanbase must be able to follow their team "without fear, discrimination or abuse" and reaffirmed a commitment to ensuring everyone inside the ground feels "safe, respected and included".
The club acknowledged how central noise and colour are to English football culture. Chanting, they said, is "a traditional and deeply embedded part of the matchday experience". The message, though, was clear: back the team, not division.
"We encourage our supporters to sing loud and proud about their football club and the players wearing the claret and blue shirt – but never in a way that creates division or causes offence among fellow fans," the statement added.
As Solomon prepares to run out at home in claret and blue for the first time in the league, West Ham have drawn a firm line on what they expect from the stands this season.
