William Gallas Confident £150m Midfielder Cole Palmer Will Join Manchester United in Future

Former Chelsea defender William Gallas is convinced that Cole Palmer will one day leave Chelsea and realize his ambition of playing for Manchester United. Another ex-Chelsea player, Wayne Bridge, has also shared his views on the potential transfer.

Back on January 27, 2026, TEAMtalk’s transfer correspondent Fraser Fletcher revealed that Manchester United planned to sign Palmer from Chelsea during the summer of 2026. Sources indicated Palmer was open to moving from Stamford Bridge to Old Trafford. The club’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, was reportedly eager to bring Palmer to the Red Devils.

Chelsea, however, want to keep hold of Palmer and have set a hefty price tag of at least £150 million for the 24-year-old England international attacking midfielder. Palmer himself has publicly downplayed any immediate plans to join Manchester United this summer.

The transfer has cooled off somewhat, with no clear indication that United will make a formal bid this window. So far this summer, Man Utd have secured Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans from Chelsea and Aston Villa respectively. The club’s co-owners, INEOS, are still considering a third midfield signing but desire a player with a different profile than Palmer.

Gallas’ Take on Palmer's Future

"I don’t think Cole Palmer will go right now. I don’t think it’s time to go right now," said Gallas. "He will definitely go to Manchester United in the future if he’s a big fan, if he’s got a dream to play for Man United, he will definitely go there, but right now I don’t think so. I think he needs to have one more big season as he did two years ago, before he got his injury problem, then he might move."

Wayne Bridge's Warning

Wayne Bridge previously advised Palmer against a switch to Manchester United. In March 2026, Bridge commented:

"It probably makes sense for Cole Palmer because he’s a Man United fan. But personally, I don’t know him, so I wouldn’t know what he’s thinking. It might make sense for Manchester United – every club would love to take Cole Palmer – but it doesn’t make sense for Chelsea. As an ex-Chelsea player, I’d be gutted if he went there. I’d have a word with him and say, ‘Look, remember what happened to Mason Mount – come on now, don’t go anywhere. He’s the main man at Chelsea. Chelsea wants to build the team around Cole Palmer."
