When Is the Women’s World Cup and Can the U.S. Take the Title?

The next women’s World Cup is set to start on June 24, 2027, in Brazil. This will mark the tournament’s 10th edition and the first time it’s hosted in South America.

Where in Brazil Will the Tournament Take Place?

The competition will be spread across several cities, including:

  • Belo Horizonte - Estadio Mineirao
  • Brasilia - Estadio Nacional
  • Fortaleza - Arena Castelao
  • Porto Alegre - Estadio Beira-Rio
  • Recife - Arena de Pernambuco
  • Rio de Janeiro - Estadio do Maracana
  • Salvador - Arena Fonte Nova
  • Sao Paulo - Arena Itaquera

Does the U.S. Women’s National Team Have a Shot at Winning?

Looking at history, the USWNT stands as the most successful team in women’s World Cup history, with four titles under their belt—more than any other nation. Germany follows with two championships, while Spain, Japan, and Norway each have one.

The U.S. won consecutive World Cups in 2015 and 2019 but stumbled in the round of 16 in the last tournament, losing 5-4 on penalties to Sweden, marking their earliest exit ever. They bounced back with a gold medal victory at the 2024 Paris Olympics but still need to secure qualification for the next World Cup.

How Will the USWNT Qualify for the 2027 World Cup?

Brazil qualifies automatically as host, leaving 31 spots open across six confederations. The USWNT will start their qualifying journey in November, facing El Salvador in the quarterfinals of the Concacaf W Championship.

Other countries will earn their places through continental tournaments or separate qualifiers. The qualification process began in February 2025 and will wrap up by February 2027.

Currently, 14 teams have secured spots, including reigning champion Spain. England, the 2023 runner-up, and others remain in contention.

What Will the Tournament Format Look Like?

The tournament will feature 32 teams divided into eight groups of four. The top two teams from each group will move on to the knockout stage. The official group draw has not been set yet but is expected around December 2026, according to US Soccer.
