The 2026 World Cup Round of 32 has kicked off, shaping the path toward the Round of 16. Seven teams have secured their spots by winning their opening knockout matches, while notable sides like Japan, Germany, and the Netherlands have been eliminated from the expanded tournament.

How Teams Qualified for the Knockouts

The top two teams from each of the 12 groups advanced directly, accompanied by the eight best third-place finishers, forming the Round of 32. This stage marks the transition from group play to single-elimination matchups where every game is do-or-die.

  • June 28: Canada edged South Africa 1-0; Canada faces Morocco in Houston on July 4 at 1 p.m. ET.
  • June 29: Brazil defeated Japan 2-1; Brazil meets Norway on July 5 in New Jersey.
  • June 29: Paraguay beat Germany on penalties (4-3) after a 1-1 draw; Paraguay will play France on July 4 in Philadelphia.

Group Stage Summary

Selected Group Highlights

Mexico topped Group A with three wins and will face Ecuador in the Round of 32 in Mexico City. South Africa finished second, earning a matchup with Canada. Meanwhile, Canada emerged from Group B alongside Switzerland, with Bosnia and Herzegovina also advancing as one of the best third-place teams.

Brazil and Morocco dominated Group C, moving forward comfortably. The U.S. led Group D, followed by Australia and Paraguay, all advancing to the knockouts. In Group E, Germany and Ivory Coast qualified directly, joined by Ecuador as a top third-place finisher.
